I am in the process of making the decision whether to have the sleeve or lap band. At the center where I am having my surgery there are no staff members who have had the sleeve. I was wondering if anyone could share the benefits of the sleeve. I have been told that weight loss is limited with the sleeve. Everyone at the center is a little partial to the lap band.

Help!

I have a few reasons why I chose the sleeve over the band:

1. I have a friend who got the band Sept 2009. She lost 50lbs & never lost another pound. She even started to gain weight by the time I got sleeved in Oct 2011. If you search the forums you will see a lot of people who are getting their bands removed and considering the sleeve or RnY.

2. The maintenence of the band wasnt for me. I didnt like the idea of getting the injections monthly.

3. I heard that when you lose weight you can feel and/or see the injection port. No thanks!

I've heard good things about the band, but the cons outweighed the pros to me.

the band is more work. The sleeve is like that area between the band and the RNY. I am a month out and I love it. I feel better. I sleep better. (and I know you didn't ask for this but..) The lovin is alot better. I changed my mind from the band to the sleeve because I can lose the weight I need to lose and its slower than the RNY and faster than the band. the band can be trial and error with the fills. but either way you choose, its all to be a healthie person and you will eventually be a loser.lol good luck

I'm pre-surgery (well, waiting on authorization...and goin nutts in the meantime...but I digress) and chose sleeving because there is some research that speaks to the effectiveness of the band in African American patients. Additionally, I did not personally like the idea of having a foreign object implanted in me, nor did I like the idea of a port permenantly under my skin on my side.

I want a one shot deal. No going back for shots monthly.

I had the LapBand and it was definitely trial and error. I had points where it was so tight I became dehydrated. I lost weight but it was constantly and randomly vomitting. Eventually the LapBand became defective (leak) and now I am about to get Sleeved. As stated in previous comment, read this site and you WILL see many who are moving away from "crapband" to become Sleeved. Due diligence is the ticket and I know you will make an executive decision to get Sleeved. Good luck!!!

Not that it was ever on my radar but my doctor is not a fan of the lapband and made it very well known. I selected the sleeve because I was deathly afraid of the malabsorbation issues which are pretty much standard with RNY.

I chose the sleeve over the band because after a very candid and frank discussion with the surgeon, it seemed like a better option for me. He actually told me that I would do better with sleeve or RNY, but he would do the band if I was set on it. After our discussion and some research, I decided he was right and I am going for the sleeve.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
