What To Eat?

I was sleeved on April 12th and I am doing very well. I get my Protein in via Lean shakes and for dinner I eat chicken. My issue is that I am getting sick of chicken. All other meats don't seem to sit well with me. I am very good with bacon for some reason. :) I can also eat some nuts as a snack. While I was PMSing, Nutella and little pretzel stix were good too but I couldn't eat very many. The nutella seemed to hit the need for something sweet. My issue is that I don't like to make a "meal" becasue I can't eat much of it. I cook two chicken breasts and then take 2ounces at a time and mix with some lomein or I just eat it plain. So, what are you all eating and how much? I need ideas.

I'm not eating lomein (noodles, right?) or most other carbs.

I still do a lot of chicken, crock pot pork or beef. I adore Beans now. I have a mini crock pot and will cook up one dry cup of Beans in that. It makes three or four servings for me. Beans are pretty high in Protein and they are moist enough to pair with a couple of ounces of almost any meat. I like boiled eggs (1 is a meal), so I'll boil six of them and eat them instead of Protein Bars or as Snacks.

One thing I've found that is really good is to cook 5 or 6 chicken wing pieces in the toaster oven. That's a full meal, sometimes a little too much. I use about a tablespoon of fat free ranch dressing to dip them in and they are really good.

I don't do many shakes now, although I keep some in the fridge to grab if I'm in a hurry. :)

The lomein is mostly for taste for the chicken. To be honest, I rarely eat the noodles...I think I do it more to have it look more like a meal. I really like Beans, but I don't know how to make them. I wanted to make some re-fried beans but to be honest, I'm a little scared. I will try the eggs as well. Thanks for the info. Any crock pot ideas to try?

I was sleeved 4/9 and am pretty much eating what I want. I still have a Protein shake in the morning. I'm not eating rice, bread or Pasta, and maybe only a bite of a potato. Last night I grilled salmon, and grilled eggplant, zucchini and mushrooms on skewers. I got about 2oz of my salmon down and one piece of each veggie. Had the other 2oz of salmon a few hours later. This week I've had trout, shrimp, diced ham, rotisserie chicken and shredded pork as Protein sources. I haven't tried steak yet but maybe soon. The only thing that hasn't agreed with me post surgery is eggs. I've tried three times and felt nauseated each time. Go figure.

I love to cook and it has been a wee bit frustrating to spend time and effort on the meal and then take just a few bites, but I'd still rather cook than eat processed food. I just put some country style pork ribs in the slow cooker for dinner tonight. They should be super tender and easy to eat tonight.

This is my first post and I will be having surgery on Thursday, 6/21/12. This pre-op diet is giving me extreme headaches.

You are going through withdraw from all the carbs, sugars and processed foods. I had a horrible headache for about four days. I found that Excedrin worked best for me. It never fully went away, but it did get better. Best of luck to you. In two months you won't even remember the headaches. :)

Beans are really easy and you don't have to start with dry. Get canned black, great northern, kidney beans. Mix them with a little bit of chicken broth. Add salsa. I also add herbs and spices like cumin or oregano. Heat up and top with cheese like Monterey jack or goat cheese. Really yummy!

Also, I bought Jennie o's Turkey Pot Roast. It's a heat in the micro and feeds me for several meals. High in Protein and tastes awesome. I found it in the mart section of the supermarket. Ask your grocer where to find it. Good luck!

I have been reading the book "Before and After" by Susan Maria Leach. She has a ton of great recipes in there that fit our nutritional needs and desire for taste! I started making some of her recipes before my surgery because they sounded good. Even if you can only eat chicken, it sounds like you need some variations on the chicken to make it interesting. She has even made fish sound appealing to me, and I am NOT a big fan of fish. I just started my pureed phase today. I had egg salad made with some low fat mayonaise, salt and pepper. It was so nice to get away from a Protein shake or soup!

I hope you find some yummy things to shake things up!

Newfoundlove is right, you don't have to start with dry. I use dried Beans because I like them better than canned. If you're going to make Beans in the crockpot from dried, here is how:

Wash and sort your dried beans to make sure there is no dirt or rocks in the beans. Place the beans in the crock pot with onion, seasoning to your taste EXCEPT SALT, salt and/or Tomato will keep your beans from getting soft. I always add a frozen chicken breast or other piece of meat at this point, then I add Water. I do it on a 3:1 ratio of Water to beans. Turn the crockpot on medium, put the lid on and then leave it alone.

When I'm doing this, I am usually leaving home by 7:30 in the morning and coming back sometime around 5 or 6 pm, so the beans cook undisturbed all day. By the time I get home, everything is soft and yummy. If I want to add salt or tomato, I do it when I get home.

Refried beans are easy, too. Do pinto beans as shown above, leaving out the meat. Let them cook until the beans are soft, then drain the water from them. It helps if you have a cast Iron skillet, but you can do this in a regular pot as well. Melt a little lard/shortening (about 1 tablespoon) in the pan, then add the soft pinto beans to the pan. Immediately start crushing the beans with the back of a fork or a potato masher. You don't need high heat, but you may need a little more moisture, water or chicken broth is fine. I add it a tablespoon at a time. It might take 5 minutes total to create refried beans from precooked dried beans, not a long process. I add onion powder/onions, garlic, black pepper to mine. If your sleeve handles spicy well, you can add chili powder, jalapenos, or any other hot seasoning you like. I used to love hot sauce or salsa mixed into my refried beans.

I didn't think we were allowed Excedrin post-op? My doctor told me Tylenol only.

I've made tons of her recipes! I love the shrimp salad, and I've made several of her fish recipes and they've all been delicious. The cottage cheese pancakes are also very very good.

You are correct. Sorry. I wasn't thinking. Tylonal only. I am not sure why I think I took Excedrin. LOL

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
