Had My Last Test Today -- The Dreaded Endoscopy!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I got back from the hospital a while ago after having my endoscopy and am feeling better after finally having something to drink and eat. Well, drink mostly. I have to say that having the procedure at 5PM and not being able to drink for that long a period of time...ugh.

The good news is that there appears to be nothing wrong on initial view from the doctor who performed the procedure. There were some polyps he found and have been sent off for testing, but he wasn't worried about them, so I won't be either.

Tomorrow marks 14 days until my surgery. Tomorrow also starts my pre-op diet. All the tests are over for me.

Bring on my new life!

Eric

Great another thing to freak me out about surgery.. Do they knock you out for it?

Patrick,

Yes they put me out for it. I had mine at 5 pm and the worst part for me was not bring able to drink at all after 8 AM. The whole procedure took about 15 minutes and I woke up in recovery 45 minutes later.

The hardest part was drinking Water too fast right afterward. That caused me to cough and that wasn't pleasant. After a glass of Water and a 4 oz apple juice I was a lot better.

Had a slight headache and felt somewhat woozy but it all passed withen an hour. I had solid food shortly after.

Really it's nothing to worry about and a good thing to have beforehand. I had no idea I had polyps but I'm glad they removed them.

Eric

The worst part for me was the guard they put in your mouth to prevent you from biting the camera. But I'm pretty claustrophobic. Fortunately, they knocked me out right after that and next thing I knew, I woke up in recovery.

Good luck, Dadto2! You'll be sleeved before you know it.

Oh boy, another anaesthesia moment for me to be escared of! Nah, I'm going to try to be brave and know that this is NO big deal, and that people do this all the time.

I'm so glad it went well for you Dadto2! Next stop: your new body! How exciting!

How long do you have to wait before you can drive? I'm finding it difficult to get a ride from friends lined up mid day.

Donny,

I can tell you this, after about 3 to 31/2 hours I felt comfortable enough that if I had to drive I could have, but I wouldn't want to. This morning I was fine. If you can find a ride I would highly recommend it to you. If not then I would definitely talk to an anesthesiologist in advance to make the best decision.

I can tell you this much; the hospital was not going to let me leave without a driver to drive me away.

Best of luck!

Eric

kczar,

After having to go through the VO2 max testing the previous Thursday and having to have a mouthpiece just like that in my mouth for an hour (awake) this was easy. At least asleep it wasn't as much an annoyance, but I hear ya!

Thanks!

Eric

I have to have this test also. Is there anything about this test that may delay surgery? I am having my test tomorrow and my surgery next week.

While the endoscopy prep looks scary - the IV line, the mask, the equipment they use on you, it was very anti-climatic for me. I got demerol for pain and I barely felt the soreness after the drugs wore off (though I'm told I was very entertaining to the Olive Garden waitress by Mom, who took me and picked me up since no driving). They took a look around, found a hiatal hernia, and cleared me for surgery on that point. Just relax and go in with a positive attitude. :) Here's to being closer to the goal of health!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
