4 Days After Surgery And I Feel Like I'm Starving To Death!

Recommended Posts

Is this normal? I'm brand new to this forum, and this is my first post. I had my surgery 4 days ago, and I have never experienced this level of starvation. I'm sipping broth, light juice, and diet Jello. But I swear I've never been this hungry and it feels like torture. Is this the way it's supposed to be? Are we supposed to suffer this way? Have any of you been prescribed an appetite supressant? I don't think I can do this for four more weeks. I am one step away from Cheeseburger-ville!

All is not lost. I'm getting a little sick of my post op diet too. Talk to your nutritionist about other options so it doesn't get boring. Variety is the spice of life. I was put on a 2 day clear liquid diet and now am on a 7 day Protein Shakes and thinned liquids diet. You might want to check out the Unjury brand protein; chicken Soup flavor. I'm able to eat thinned down Campbell's Cheddar cheese Soup! I know how ya feel about wanting a cheesburger-I feel that way too but I don't want to jeopardize what's been done or make myself really sick. That's all I can do is share my experience with you. Good luck.

did you happen to combine the Unjury chicken soup with the Campbell's cheddar cheese soup? I don't know why but that sounds like it would be good together.

How about cream of wheat. I put a small amount of butter and Surat (not sure this is allowed). I do not make it sweet just enough to make it durable and use silk (soy milk) after its in my bowl to make it mushie to liquidy.

Popsicles

chocolate protien shakes - cold

Today I tried Kentucky fried chicken's mash potatoes and drained the gravy

Yoguart

Those things have really helped me

Oh and crm of chicken Soup and pea soup work too. I hope this helps you.

This would really stink to go through this alone. I'm thankful for others. :)

Hi Zephyr,

I haven't tried those two together, but I have used chicken broth to thin out the cheddar soup and it is tasty. But I've noticed that nothing tastes the same twice. I'm wondering if there's a site somewhere out there that can show me more choices.

Gina,

I am 4 weeks post op and am truley hungry a lot of the time. My NUT said that 95% or more of the patients she sees don't feel that hunger (as the hormone that creates it was supposed to be removed in surgery). I am really struggleing and know how you feel.

Thanks everybody for your replies. I'm right past week two and doing much better. I've been creative with my diet now, and have come up with a few new things to keep from getting really bored and hungry. I got so sick of broth, I had to stop it. I'm on full liquids now, so I can expand my diet a lot. Here are some of my new "recipes":

Lowfat milk with vanilla Protein powder, but I add flavored extracts, such as banana or orange, toss in some ice and now I have a smoothie. Sometimes I add a half of a banana (shhhhh).

A can of low-sodium V8, with a pinch of garlic, a teaspoon of hot sauce (shhhh) and a teaspoon of steak sauce (sounds gross, but it's not). Pour it over ice, and add a celery stick. You can't eat the celery, but it makes you think you're drinking a Bloody Mary ;-)

I mix a can of Cream of Broccoli Soup, and a can of Cheddar cheese soup, both made with milk, in the same pot. Add pepper, and pour into small storage containers. When you want one, just pop it into the microwave.

This is the best one: I found Cheesecake flavored Sugar Free/Fat Free pudding at Target. I made a whole package with cold milk, and poured into small plastic storage containers, and let it set. Then I put an entire package of fresh strawberries into the blender with a shot of liquid Vitamins, a couple shots of diet-cranberry juice, a packet of Sweet & Low, and pureed it. Once the pudding was solid, I opened the containers, and poured the strawberry puree over it. Now you have Sugar/fat free cheesecake, with pure strawberry puree! DEE-LISH!!!

I got some really high-volume Protein and Vitamin supplements, too: http://www.amazon.com/WHEY-Liquid-Protein-Acai-Berry/dp/B002GU6W54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335563462&sr=8-1

I forgot to mention that I add a scoop of Protein Powder to the pudding when I'm mixing it in the blender :-)

Hey...I am on day six and I know how you feel.

However, I talked to a friend of mine who had the RGB surgery a year ago. She was told that exercise is the best way to curb that hunger feeling because believe it or not, it's more your mind than your tummy. So, I found these yoga videos on Netflix (I use the streaming service) and they have one that is just for beginner yoga students. I have been sitting on my couch and running the breathing portion of the video for twenty minutes. All it is breathing and VERY light stretching with your arms. I make sure I get up and talk a walk around the block at least twice a day (thank God for my hubby's exercise belt).

Believe me, exercise is helping me. I am down to two doses of Tylenol a day and peeing like a fiend. Just hang in there! The surgery was just the beginning. We can do this...

ps. I had to have a very large hernia surgically closed at the same time my stomach was removed, so abdominal movement is challenging but it feels better.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
