8 Days Post Op And Starving

Recommended Posts

I refuse to eat mashed potatoes because of the amount of carbs they have in them as opposed to the amount of Proteins. They dont really equal each other out in a good way. I like the greek yogurt as well. I just eat the plain though and Breakstone low fat cottage cheese has 11 grams of Protein in just 4oz plus it tastes good to me. I had 2oz of it tonight and was really full.

Mashed potatoes have about 4g of Protein per 1/2 C. They're a pretty crappy Protein source. For the same volume of food, you could get about 3x the protein from a good Greek yogurt. I'm not trying to be a "food nazi" - eat what you want, of course. I just didn't want you to be eating mashed potatoes for the sake of protein (as you said) when they actually have very little protein.

I actually tried to clarify that with another post, but the site was down or just freezing up on me. The mashed potatoes were not for protein. They were my first test of how soft food would feel and settle in my stomach. I was thinking of them as safe. I didn't know they had any protein at all, so learned something today.

Glad you pointed it out, though. If I hadn't known, I would WANT to know. I am a rookie and need all the help/advice I can get.

I think that mashed potatoes was a safe test food. Keep your head up and moving forward!

I'm a week post-op today, and hardly have any hunger at all! I found I wasn't getting any food in, so after speaking to my dietician yesterday, we tweaked my post-o diet a bit in order for me to get the Protein I need and get some of my energy back...

All in all, chat with your dietician and see if there is something that you can do, safely and with the ok from your dietician, that will make this time a little easier...

I am almostb2 weeks post op and I could have grits, eggs, oatmeal, Soups (with no meat or noodles) mashed potatoes and a couple other things by post op day 3. I can't eat very much of anything, so I don't think these foods are doing that much damage. If my dr put me on the diet....I'm sure he knows it won't cause any damagein the long run.

Hello. I'm 8 days post op and I am starving. My stomach keeps grumbling and hurting because I'm so dang hungry. I get all my Protein shakes in and I drink my liquids. They just don't stay with me long. I have to be on full liquids until next Monday but I want to eat something SO bad. Lol

I am 2 weeks from op now, I started eating cottage cheese with thai chilli sause to spice up little bit ) and some greek yogurt with splenda since day 3 of op. I am doing ok. May be this will help. Don't count me on that thai chilli sause but just a plain cottage cheese and greek yogurt should be ok. I also had Campbell cream of brocolli and cream of mushroom Soups from day 4 also. Just fyi.I am just two weeks today and I feel like starting some solid food but I will tillI see my Doctor on Friday and then he will decide. Let me tell you my Doctor allowed me to eat cottage cheese amd greek yogurt from day one.

I hear you. My hungries started on Saturday after my Monday surgery. I started really taking in a lot of strained Soups. Somehow the warm things made me feel a little more full. I had several progresso Soups I strained and those were my life savers! What about some split pea Soup thinned with veggie broth? It'll be over soon and you'll be able to add some foods! Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your post. Im going to try tomorrow! I dont know why I'm hungry because i wasn't before surgery. Also 8 days out.

My favorite "first foods" were oatmeal and cream of wheat thinned with protien drink. Also had great luck with yogurt (greek whipped) and cottage cheese.

Mashed potatoes were recommended by my nutritionist because they are very easy to digest and are often tolerated when other things are not. They are on our encouraged list.

I am the same. Day 3 i was craving turkey and cheese. The whole time i was recovering postop i watched cooking shows because it was so interesting to me. I sometimes miss being able to eat a normal home cooked meal with family instead of sitting their with my Protein. I am now about 4 weeks postop and feel hungry often. My doctor says hunger will diminish over time. And i notice with heavier stuff i get full fast like with mashed potatoes or cream of wheat. Looking forward to incorporating more normal healthy food!

My surgeon recommended avoiding watching too much TV during recovery since there are so many commercials for food. It can trigger head hunger.

Early after surgery I found that I either had head hunger or much more likely I was dehydrated if I felt hungry. I had to play with the temp of the drink to make sure I was getting enough Water. The first couple of weeks I drank much more water if it was hot or warm.

Even now at almost 3 years out there are times that I get hungry and I know I should not be based on when and what I last ate. That generally means that I need more water. Sometimes it means that I drove past the local pizza joint/steak restaurant/Burger King and I get head hunger since it smelled good. If it is head hunger and I ignore it or try to focus on something else the hunger goes away quickly. It never hurts to sip some more water. I always have water with me-always. I prefer the flavored water like Mio or Crystal Light. Be careful some of the Crystal Light have caffeine.

I personally never ate mashed potatoes, oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, toast or anything that is very high in simple carbs but relatively low in Protein during my pureed or soft phases. My personal history is that simple carbs don't stick with my at all and I get hungry quickly after eating them. They spiked my blood sugar. YMMV.

I found that for the couple of weeks I was on full liquid/pureed/soft that I really had enough choices that were higher in protein to not eat simple carbs. For the first few months after the sleeve the majority of my protein came from Protein Shakes. I normally had 2 per day- Breakfast and one snack. My lunch and dinner were more normal foods but still very high in protein and non-starchy vegetables. I still very rarely will have white potatoes, bread, Pasta, oatmeal, corn, etc.. and if I do it is only about 2 bites just for the taste. About the only crackers I eat in moderation is Triscuits since they are about as whole grain as you can find. Even then I only have a few and only every couple of months.

I am actually back to one shake a day right now for lunch. I had gotten stuck at 154-156 for about 18 months. (100 pounds down from my highest weight so not unhappy with how I looked/felt) I decided I really wanted to get to my goal weight of 135. I am now at 147.8 as of this morning. I have lost 7 pounds in just over a month.

Welcome to the losers bench.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
