Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?

What is the DS

No, even though I was supermorbidly obese and a more radical surgery probably would have resulted in quicker weight loss. Because of my age (62 at time of surgery) and increased risk of complications, I decided to go with the sleeve because it has the lowest risk of complications.

No, I won't do the DS. This is it for me. I have to make it work, even though it will probably take another year to get where I want to be.

No, I would never have considered a bypass/RNY. Even though the death rates have gotten better, they are still bad. It also is a pretty horrible surgery frankly. I would rather be fat forever than do that to myself. At least I am healthy. I cannot say the same for so many who have gone through that. Malabsorption just really squicks me out to the core.

I started wanting a band but the surgeon's office was pushing the sleeve and started looking into it. I am going through the motions and some days I am ready to go and others I am so not convinced. For me, I have to get control of the rollercoaster.

Yes, as I never really considered the vsg since it wasn't offered by the surgeons in my area. But now that I'm self pay, I spoke with my new surgeon and he suggested this surgery over the gastric bypass I was considering. To be honest I'm scared I won't lose the weight I need to (125) with the sleeve, hence the reason I joined this forum. I think this surgery is best since who knows what we will face as we get older. If we get arthritis, we can take Motrin, but with bypass, not so much

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
