How Much Time Did You Take Off Of Work?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am trying to decide how much time is suitable to take off of work.

I am a student so I will be doing this surgery right after my finals, so I will have my spring break (1 week) and a few days to recover before work and school starts. I will be going back to school normally when it starts.

My question is about work, I work about 18 hours part time in addition to school at a dining common that requires lots of lifting, bending and running around. I work in the back with storage boxes and cleaning big pots as well.

My boss said she will give me as much time as I need as long as my doctor writes a letter. Dr. Garcia said it wouldn't be a problem to give me however long I want. I don't want to take advantage of it or take more time than I need, I do need my job money.

How much time do you think I will need to recover? How much time did you take off?

My doc told me 2-4 weeks. I elected to take a month off, I am a store manager of a busy store and j knew I would be over lifting working too hard too fast. I was approved for FMLA and going back to work Thursday :-(

I am a teacher. I took 3 weeks off. The week that I returned, I was worn out at the end of the day. My doctor put me on a 5 pound weight restriction for 6 weeks. Meaning I couldn't lift more than 5 pounds. This is to safeguard against hernias.

I have a desk job so I am taking one week off. If I had to move around a lot and lift I would have taken 3 weeks off.

I took 8 days off, but I have a fairly sedentary job. With your job, I'd have probably taken 3 to 4 weeks off. Good luck!! :)

I've taken 6-weeks off. I don't return to work until 1/30. I'm glad I did. There are times I'm so beat I just nap.

My surgeon requires a minimum of 6 weeks (preferably 8) off if your job requires physical labor. That's pretty much a general rule of thumb for any major surgery. I have a desk job, so was able to return to work after 2 1/2 weeks, even though the doctor recommends 4 weeks. It would have been sooner, but my surgery was 2 weeks before Memorial Day and I had already scheduled vacation for an extended holiday weekend!

Thanks for the replies!

I think I am just going to do the 1 official week off and my partial week off. I do have a letter that says I need to be doing light work and my boss has agreed to that, so I will probably just be cooking or baking!

Once, again thanks!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
