Why No Drinking While Eating After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Body imagery - I look better in my clothes after shedding 70 lbs.., but I hate the way my skin sags where the fat used to be! So now after losing the weight, I STILL don't like my body! Anyone have any suggestons?

Thanks!

Wow!!! I just found this thread while searching on google for the reason “why” we shouldn’t drink with meals. SOLD!! Now I get it !!!

Embedded link no longer works 🤔

https://youtu.be/xR0VM3mnsgM. You can fast forward like original poster suggests to 2:25

My nutritionist says if you drink while you eat it can stretch your stomach. So her rule of thumb is don’t drink 15 min before a meal. Take 15-30 min to eat and don’t drink until 15 min after meal. This personally works for me and I was a huge drinker before. Like the other person said if I take a sip of drink while eating I feel beyond stuffed and it’s sooo uncomfortable. This has been my experience.

I'm 10 years post gastric bypass. Two reasons: 1) you'll fill up your pouch with Water instead of food that can give you the nutrients you so desperately need. AND 2) I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH: Your pouch WILL and TRUST ME IT WILL stretch faster if you drink water with your meals.

Do whatever you can to avoid it.

You will read some comments of people being 1, 2, 3 or even 5 years post-op that they haven't gained any weight back by drinking water with food. But time goes by and the pouch DOES stretch. Water with food makes it stretch faster so do whatever you can to avoid getting used to it. And avoid carbonated drinks at all costs. I haven't touched any in 10 years.

Good luck!

I had the sleeve . If I drink too quickly after eating it flat out hurts. I’ve forgotten a few times and took a few sips of something too quickly and the discomfort lasted about 30 mins and was immediate. My surgeon says there just isn’t enough room for both. I usually drink and wait 10 mins to eat. I usually wait 45 mins after I eat to drink something . So when I go out to eat I’ll drink something until we place the food order and then stop because food usually hits the table in about 10 mins . Hope this helps !

This has been the hardest part for me in my first year. What helped me was a tip from my nutritionist . She said to ask for a cup of ice. That way if i really need it I can have ice and it satisfies me without all the volume. And no refills 😉

I drink a tiny sip maybe two after eating because the after taste of eating anything and not washing it down actually makes me nauseous , I know now what my little pouch can tolerate so I eat a little less just because I need to sip on some Water after eating

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
