When to give up Diet pop?

Recommended Posts

Well I am 18 days til surgery and everyday I keep telling myself this is the day I will quit drinking my Diet Dr Pepper and I dont. Has anyone else had this problem and when did you quit drinking it. I am not a coffee or tea drinker. I like flavored waters BUT Diet Dr Pepper is my downfall. :patriot: Happy Veterans Day everyone!!!

I think cold turkey is your best bet.... :) I've never been a huge soda pop drinker, but what about trying to drink it flat? I think the huge issue after surgery is the carbonation.

Laura Ann, I gave up my diet coke addiction when I started the liquid diet. It might be easier to give up the soda before you start the diet, though. You don't want to be dealing with caffeine withdrawal at the same time as hunger! :)

Good luck!! :)

Yes, Veterans Day, a good thing to remember. I would drink as much as you want all the way up to your surgery, because afterwards you will have to let it go for at least three or four months and very little then.

I would take the suggestion of Lissa to switch to decaffeinated the last week though, you won't need the headaches on top of every thing else.

  • I gave up soda the day I started my liquid diet which was 10 days before surgery. It was the day before Thanksgiving last year when I started. I have not had any soda other than a few sips for the first time just a few months ago. It was uncomfortable to drink so even though I miss it, I love myself not to give back into the tempation to start drinking it again. Good Luck

Thanks everyone, I think I will do it on Friday when I start liquids. I drink caffeine free Diet Dr Pepper, so hopefully no headaches.!!! This is going to be the hardest part of the hole thing!!!

I am going on a year post-op and STILL drink 3 or 4 a week. I see no harm and I'm still losing weight, ~170 pounds down now. I see no harm. I've read that some consider it a factor in weight gain but I've never seen any real explanation as to why exactly it does. I've heard of it sparking desire for sweets but it hasn't in me.

I will continue to enjoy an occasional can a few days a week till I see something definitive saying it's doing me harm.

I quit last year when I decided to enter my journey to a healthier me. I just quit cold turkey. I don't think I could drink one now if I wanted to. It has been too long. Samething when I quit smoking. My two worst habits I kicked. I'm so glad I did. Good luck. :)

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
