Carbonated Drinks and Fried Foods

FWIW We don't have a pouch, nor do we have a stoma. We have a fully functioning teeny tiny stomach. So the article above regarding stretching of the pouch and stoma would not apply to us.

And honestly the bubbles would not at all have the strength to stretch anything...we'd burp before that happened.

You're right the article I posted is not about the sleeve. I have yet to find any scientific proof that the stomach can or for that matter can not be stretched. If you feel it can't drink away, hell I'll buy you a soda. As for me, I have nothing to gain (except weight) from it, so I'm not doing it. If you feel it's not going to affect you, feel free.

um i am a third party and i need to say that you shouldnt be aguing. calm down take a breath its all personal and a matter of openion my dr. reffers to my tummy as a pouch and he says that i have a stoma so i donno. i think that its ok to try it if you want to but its not bad to know the dangers as well. i had the lap band and was really succesfull and never touched carbonated drinks and i did great. but i still had a slip... i dont want carbonation ever again because i know its bad i have seen people gain weight because of it. however if your one that drinks it and your happy cool but dont get mad because someone wanted to show the facts that it COULD be bad for you. we are all on here to share our knowlege and experience i think your bolth right in your own journey.

FWIW. I wasn't arguing. :angelsad2: Just wanted to point out that we don't have a pouch or a stoma so that article isn't accurate for us. :shrug We have our pyloric valve to regulate our digestion and gasses will rise up in the form of burps. That's all I was saying.

I agree. I don't feel because I have half a can of Diet Dr Pepper a day that it is going to cause me to gain all my weight back. I make sure I get in all of my Water daily, so if I choose to drink a carbonated drink as a little pick me up at lunch, that is my choice.

I've eaten french fries, chicken fingers and fried chicken before. Grant it, they were bites and not whole orders of food, and nothing happened to me. I wasn't uncomfortable at all but it's not something I see myself doing again any time soon. Also, and this may sound weird but all of the fried foods that I tried all seems super duper salty. They were purchased from places that I frequented in the past and I doubt if they changed their recipies but it was way too salty for me. That alone if enough to make me stop eating it/them.

I have a couple of sips of a soda every once and awhile. Sleevie doesn't like fried food except for french fries. So anything like fried chicken...no more for me. I can eat it. It doesn't come back up, but it just leaves me with a yucky feeling. I really want soda bad. Fountain sodas are the best! That article, to me, seemed like it was talking about eating and drinking at the same time. Or drinking after a meal. So what if you have a soda on an empty stomach? How could it possibly expand anything? If I poured soda into a balloon and tied the balloon off, would the balloon expand. I think I will try this :)

I have found that after being sleeved and not having any diet coke for nearly a year, I just don't like the taste anymore and definitely don't like the carbonation - it make me feel too full, even small sips. Never have liked a "flat" soda. So for me it's a no brainer - I just don't drink them. My medical team said not to, so I don't. I trust them, they are experts.

As for fried food, I may have a little on occasion and I do fine with it. Anything that is very greasy I avoid altogether. I was never a big fried food eater to begin with.

Ultimately it is everyone's choice to make, isn't it? I guess for me this journey has been more about learning to make the best choice. I know I made a lot of choices presurgery because something sounded good or I wanted it and that line of reasoning got me to nearly 500 lbs.

Maybe I needed a little help realizing how important it is to try to always make the best choice. Will that mean at times I'll feel like I'm missing out on things? Yep. Does that feeling of missout last long when I realize that by trying to make the best possible choice I'm 43% of the size I started at?....Nahhhh I don't think so.

In any event, I wish everyone good luck on their chosen path.

As a long-time Pepsi addict, being told by my surgeon that I can never have a carbonated beverage again came as quite a blow to me. But I also believe that this isn't just a journey about losing weight (at least for me) it's about learning healthy habits that will keep me from ever going back to where I was.

Agreeing with Paul, there really is no redeeming value to soda and I know that for me (based on my past experiences with giving up soda) one sip will lead to one can to going back to where I was. For me that is a risk I dare not take after all the work I have done so far.

My surgeon is one of the ones who firmly believes that drinking soda will lead to expanding your stomach, whether it's before, during or after your meals. I for one am not willing to take that chance.

I stopped drinking soda about 2 years ago and only ask for Water in restaurants. Before my surgery I could not stand the taste of soda since it burned my throat. I don't think I will ever have some now that i've had surgery unless it is flat Dr. Depper.

I tried a couple sips of a fountain Diet Coke at a baseball game last month and it tasted terrible! I used to drink 4 or 5 sodas (regular AND diet) a day, now I can't really stand the taste of them.

As for fried food, I stay away unless it's a special ocassion.....that means Scarborough Faire in the spring and the State Fair of Texas in the fall. Even then I'm only allowing myself a few small bites. It's something to look forward to but not enough to throw me off track. Who can say no to fried pickles anyway? :)

I didnt do much research on it...but I know my doctor and my nutritionist specifically told me no to carbonated drinks because it may cause my stomach to stretch...I intend on following my doctors orders and plus carbonated drinks was one of the main causes of my weight gain...why should I drink it know...time for a healthy lifestyle change...I don't miss carbonated drinks at all...thank goodness.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
