I had my surgery on Monday, I actually had a rough couple days in the hospital. Came home and still a bit exhausted. I dont have too much pain which is GREAT! I have been having diareah though since I came home. Is this normal? Also, I can barely drink anything, Today is the first day I have had 2 Protein Shakes, Of course it takes me an hour or so to finish it. I just want to recover healthy and quickly. Should any of this be a concern? I am sipping away...but I seem to be only gettign in about 30 oz of Water or liquids a day.

Hey me too!!! My experience was actually pretty good, other than the normal discomfort and being tired from the pain medications. Once I got home I even felt better. I was walking as much as I could because everyone said that was one of the main things to do to get back on track. I too cannot seem to get the amount of fluids that I am supposed to but I just keep trying. I havent dared to try a Protein shake, are you drinking it with Water? I too have been having diarrhea, just small amounts but frequently. I have been able to tolerate Jello and popsicles as of today. Yesterday I was feeling so good that I accidently over did it taking my meds, fluids and Vitamins, I took one of my Vitamins and without thinking took another right after, all of a sudden I felt this horrible wave of nasuea and went to the restroom because I felt as if I was about to vomit, I fortunately did not but I did heave pretty good a couple of times and since then I feel as if the sutture in my largest incision (where the stomach was removed) has been pulled very tight and it is causes some very uncomfortable discomfort. Do you feel any pulling when you stand or twist? I had not needed any pain meds since the night before until that happened, now I am taking them every 4 hours again. My dr was Dr. Oldham out of Baptist Hospital East in Louisville KY. Were you there as well?

The diarrhea is probably because you are doing nothing but drinking right now. I wouldn't let it worry you unless it seems like you are outputting more than you are inputting. If so, a call to your doc might be in order.

As for Protein shakes and drinking Water, do what you can, but remember that your tummies are still VERY tender. It will take a while for them to quit swelling and to allow more food/liquid down the hatch. My doc tells his patients to worry more about getting the Water in (small sips!) for the first week or so, then to add in Protein as you can tolerate it. He also has his patients take two chewable Vitamins a day until we are back on solids.

I just started solids this week, so I'm really feeling the effects of the stomach being smaller. I have to really work to remind my eyes that my stomach can't handle what they think they want. :) Rex (my tummy) is VERY particular about what he will tolerate right now and how much of anything goes into me. I haven't had anything come back up, but it's been a close call a couple of times. Rex also is not very tolerant of anything even mildly spicy right now. I'm hoping that will ease up as I heal so that I can once again enjoy a nacho or two with jalapenos. Tiffykins gives me hope that I will eventually be able to eat mexican food again, even if it is in greatly reduced quantities. :)

I had my surgery on Monday, too. I am having diarrhea also. I couldn't drink much that first three days either. I think I only had 12 ounces Wednesday, 26 ounces on Thursday, but today I have done much better. I am up to 40 already. I don't seem to have to sip anymore either. That kinds of scares me. I don't want to think now when I start to eat it will me the same.

I also had surgery monday 3rd. I'd already been drinking Protein drinks for two weeks, clear for 2 days, the operation, then clear for two more. I've been trying to slowly drink 20 oz of skim with 2 scoops of protien (74 g Protein in all). It's harder to get the Water in...I should focus more on that. I confess I did have some watery oatmeal 2 T and yog 2 T for the last two mornings (free breaky at hotel) , I also had a couple of tablespoons of potatoe bacon Soup (just the fluid) a couple of nights ago. I just had about 2 T of pancake and 2 T scrambled egg because the diarrhea bugged me...mucho gas. I don't h ave nausea and I'm really full after...but then forget for a few hours. I need to have a 30 minute timer to remind me to drink Water inbetween 3 oz of protein shake. I'm not recommending you do what I've done...it's hard to be away from home with hubby going to restruarants.

OOPS, WAIT A MINUTE! Okay, as you read the above, I sounded so confident and since then I've tried to figure out how I'm going to progress. HOWEVER, this is just me thinking that I can do things my way rather than following advice. I threw up a tiny bit of rice/chicken today...just came right back out. I WILL NOW CONCEDE TO FOLLOWING MY SURGEON'S INSTRUCTIONS ON EATING /DRINKING WITHOUT MUCKING AROUND WITH IT!!! I said that loud so I can hear myself.

total loss since surgery: 11 lbs. in 7 days.

Hi, congrats on being a Sleever!!! It sounds like you are doing very well. It is normal to have diarrhea for a while, cuz you are only taking liquids in. Try to get as much Fluid in as you can to stay hydrated, but yes, it takes a while to build up to all your fluids and Protein. You may be tired for a while, but again normal, you just had surgery and your body has to recover and heal. It takes a while to adjust to getting everything in, but you will have more room once the swelling goes down in your sleeve. Usually it takes about 4-6 wks. I hope you have a very easy recovery!

:)

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
