Can we take vicodine?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody... I have a real quick question for you. I'm getting a major tension headache (3 kids will do that to you! LOL) and my doc says Motrin is a no-no (questionable I know, but want to follow his 'rules'). But now it's 10:30 on Sunday night & I don't wanna call the doc's after hours number just for this. Anyway, so my mom gave me a vicodine (only a 500mg) which has knocked my headaches out in the past. So, do you think it will bother my stomach if I took it tonight till I can call the doc tomorrow am? I had my surgery on July 5th (almost two months ago).

Thanks in advance!

the reason motrin is a nono is that it really irritates the lining of the stomach. i took a vicodin already last night for a migrane and didnt have any trouble, and im only 5 days post op today. crush it up and add it to a little Water first to help disolve it first...that way it will go right through to you intestines where it gets absorbed anyways and it wont hurt you tummy.

i hope you feel better

I was on liquid vicodin post op because I don't handle codeine well. I took it for about 4 days and was fine. I would still call and check with your doc though. That's what the on-call number is for. :)

ps-dont take lortab in the same time frame for other pain as this is the same type of medicine and it would not be good to combine the two. figuring you are 2 months out im guessing you dont have it anymore, but i just wanted to be sure.

thanks everyone! I tried crushing it up and putting it in a little Water to dissolve it... talk about yucky!!!! LOL... I got it down, but it wasn't easy! Oh well, between that and having my best friend message my scalp, neck, and head (she's a message therapist) I hope I'll feel way better by morning!

Thanks again!

My doctor prescribed me Vicodin for pain (unrelated to the surgery) and I've been taking it for almost 2 months without issue.

There's no need to crush them up, just swallow them whole!

It shouldn't hurt your sleeve, but it's extremely addicting. I suffer from Migraines, I have for about 20 yrs. You need to get your doctor to prescribe something for you. I take Imitrex or Maxalt at onset, it is non-narcotic, and takes care of my headache usually within 45 minutes. Good luck!

You could also try Relpax which is in the triptan family. My heart rate went too high when I took Imitrex, but it does have a lot of options on dosage. I prefered the Imitrex injections because they are fast acting and I don't have to worry about my sleeve.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
