Well Ms Skinniness admits to the problem for HER. Empty calories aka crap! This isn't easy for any of us or we wouldn't have to had surgery. Someone asked about age earlier. I'm 52 so not young by any means but I didn't have a super high bmi to start with @38 I think it was. Now it's 21. And it took me about 20 months to get to goal. this surgery may not be a strong enough fun for a bmi over 45 though. My 2 friends who gained back were much heavier than me to start. Although I have a male friend who weighed in the 340's and now maintains at 210ish.

Laura i was pondering if age and ot starting weight had bearing on success. I was 67 when i had the VSG. My starting weight there was 360 something but i was down from 428 with pills and exercise. I do believe it is habit that is a strong contributer to success. A mind set for 67 years is not easy to shift. I think it akin to making an honest person turn to thievery. U need a real traumA to cause the change. Apparently, surgery isn't invasive enough...if invasive isthe correct word here.

Well on another forum I'm on there are some older people in their 60's who've done well. I think your starting weight is more likely the issue. It seems from all I've seen that higher bmis need duodenal switch surgery.

I've enjoyed reading this thread. All of the different opinions and different eating habits. Just like we all researched and planned before we had surgery, I believe for people like myself who are only a few weeks out, we need to research and plan for maintenance. We should focus on attitude and forming good habits. I am 51. I don't just want to see the success stories, I want to hear about the struggles and difficulty as well. I want to educate myself so I don't make the same mistakes as others. I am very interested in eating a vegan diet. I know it's health benefits. I hope to transition to that through this journey. The hardest habit for me to form is exercise. I am struggling to make it part of my daily routine.

I hope that old age doesn't predict WLS failure!

I had VSG surgery at age 68. Am 69 now.

The impression I have, from reading WLS boards for almost 2 years, is that older people are incredibly determined to change. After all, at our age WLS isn't something we're motivated to do by vanity -- but by a last-ditch desperation to become healthier. That's true for me.

However, I doubt a single trait predicts WLS patients' success.

Agree with ann on this. Laura, i do want to say that two surgeons wanted to do bypass on me. I wanted vsg. When the second surgeon completed my VSG he stated emphatically that if *i* had asked for bypass before he did the procedure, he wouldve closed me up and walked,away from my surgery because it was totally not suitable for me. I don't understand the medical reason for that...but something told me to ask for VSG. You may be right abt malabsorption . In my case, i absorb everything EXCEPT fats! I have no Vitamin /mineral deficiencies. Like i say, i dont have any 'crappy 'food in the house but i do have good food. Berries, nuts, carrots,peppers, mushrooms, plain yoghurt, kale, chickpeas...etc and boy do i graze thru the day on those.

So your going on 4 years. I'm a grazer too and like I said I eat mostly whole food plant based. I just get so full so fast. I still can only eat about 3/4 of a cup of food at a time so I'm eating every 2 to 3 hours. I hope you can continue to come down even if it's slow.

I can graze on nuts and craisins all day... I have a beach mix with almonds, plantain chips, coconut slivers, yogurt covered raisins and pecans. I keep a measuring cup in the jar to ensure a 1/4 cup serving... If I get too hungry, my blood sugar gets unstable and I get light headed and shaky... Keeping this with me helps at the office or running errands when I need some quick Protein. But eating 1290 calories a day using My Fitness Pal, taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, parking further away AND doing the treadclimber for 30 min every other day would get me maintenance and if I'm lucky - a 1lb loss... So, it's hard even NOT eating crap. BTW, I'm 54 and was sleeved in 2012...

I eat very limited amounts of nuts because of the high calorie density. There's so many things to eat that have less calories and more volume. I may eat a small plate of baked fries or an apple. I don't worry about Protein per se, just eat a wide variety of whole grains and salads/cooked veggies every single day. My labs have improved over the time I've been doing this too so that's an added bonus.

Rosey I didn't realize you were in the "senior" group. I'll be 63 in Oct.

There is no magic answer. I have a friend who was sleeved a week after me and eats nothing but crap. Cookies, candy, (tons of candy) chips, etc. She rarely eats a normal meal. She is a size 4 and is under 120. I can't even go over to her house anymore. It's just too much temptation.

I am really struggling because exercise has been taken away from me. I'm having another back surgery in a few weeks. I'm lucky that I've eaten the Atkins way most of my life. I went on Atkins at age 13 for the first time. It's really easy to let sugar and carbs back into my life though. It's a daily struggle to live in this world when everyone else IS eating crap.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
