Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Sleeve4me, what kind of exercising do u do? You say u eat what u want. Can u elaborate? I am wondering (well, really know) if u think u would maintain w/o exercising.

I forgot to respond to your last question...It's bizarre but for me when I really exercise I typically gain :( go figure. This year I really just said the heck with it and decided I need to get this body strong and healthy on the inside now! Losing the weight was super important but I always said I want to be thin and HEALTHY! Not thin and frail and unhealthy :(...So alas, here I am. I was pretty much 144-145 for a looooooong time without this much exercise and NOW I'm finding myself holding at 148 and up to 149 a few times.

I was sleeved January 31, 2012 and eat what I want, all in moderation. I too only take a couple bites sometimes or eat just a tangerine and some nuts in a 8 hour period. I can gain 3 pounds, but then I drop that and more in a week. I worked out for a year before surgery and this helped build muscle and increase my metabolism and I work out now. I figure I am going to have trouble in awhile, but for me the band restriction has worked great for me And I quit cigarettes after 30 years of smoking for this operation, can't booze it up anymore and no longer can binge. That has helped tremendously. I am being very careful not to stretch my sleeve & stop eating after a couple bites, wait a long time and only take a couple more bites if I'm still hungry. And, YES I do feel hungry sometimes. I think that's because I'm stil not getting enough Protein in the morning. Overall, this surgery has been life changing and I LOVE it!

I recently gained 5lbs and I know it is not just a flux... it is because I have been stress eating :( Made a decision to get back on the wagon and the good news is that I am feeling motivated to go to the gym. I went for a month or two with zero desire. Maintenance is way more scary than initial loss! I am 138 as of this morning. I was down to 132-133. Oh and I was 1yr post op at the end of December.

I used to have 55-57 kgs last year and now it seems I am stucked around 64-54 kgs and I am more depressed every day.

I swear every day I will eat less, I will stop eating sweets but I always end up in bed with some chocolate or some carbs with many calories...

I think everything goes from head... I still think as an obese 4 years after surgery and it`s getting worst.

Anyone have these kind of thoughts and feelings?

I had those difficulties before the sleeve, but I'm only 6 months post op so I hope I don't fall back in those patterns. I'm working on having a no sugar diet right now. That means no added sugars or artifical sweeteners, fructose (only in fruit). I am a sugar addict and sugar is as addictive as Cocaine. There was a program on 60 minutes discussing the toxicity of sugar. I highly advise that you look it up and read or view the episode. Right now, I hate sugar, but it does taste good.

Maybe you can start by stop eating the candy and don't eat after a certain time at night. Focus on Proteins and then veggies, no chips, etc. Get all those unhealthy foods out of your house. If your family brings them home, then sit down and ask them for their help and ask then not to bring these foods home. They can eat them outside of your home. You can do this, it's just getting refocused. ;) Maybe counseling could help also. ;)

I was a good girl for 3 years after surgery then I quit smoking and I start to discover orange fresh, after 8 chocolate and then the rest...

I have 2 kgs over the superior limit of normal and I think these two kgs are impossible to lose.

How do we lose weight after gaining it? My doctor is very short by saying "eat only 3 meals per day"... and that is all... oh yes and "lose weight" (LOL)

Does anybody experienced this?

As for exercises what is better? Aerobic or fitness? Is something "in house" working? Does Vitamins "help" us gaining weight?

Thanks tons!

Hi Aoa,

It is so easy to fall back into very bad habits once we hit goal. The trick is to not over do them. AND if you can't control your portions with them, then sadly it's best to not eat them at all. Triggers is something I'm going to have to learn to live without!!

Dorrie is so right, and that 60 Minutes hit on Sugar Toxicity is true. I've always known this and I'm very addicted to it. I'm working to break my habit as we speak. I haven't eaten a solid meal since 5 PM last night. I won't again until 8 AM Friday morning. I'm doing all liquids in between. I'm doing unjury chicken Soup 3x per day, Atkins Advantage 3x per day and some G2 to help with the sugar crashing. I space out 8 Oz servings 4x per day throughout. It helps a lot.

You didn't mention exactly how much you've gained. I haven't gained weight per se, but I have noticed I'm gaining inches in areas I'm not wanting! I'm also going to start the Insanity! Challenge on Monday so I want to be in a good place come that day.

Fact is you're just going to have to dig deep and stop the gaining in it's tracks. Do a few days of super low carbs to break the Sugar Demon then get back to sleever basics which is Protein first and whatever room you have left eat healthy carbs. Veggies, Fruits, whole grains, legumes... whatever.

As for which workouts are best, I personally prefer cardio. I don't do a lot of weight training and I really don't want to. I gain muscular physique naturally and the muscles I do have I feel are adequate. I like the leaner (perhaps borderline skinny if you will), more toned look myself. So, it just depends what look you're going after, as long as its healthy.

Good luck to you!!

Question for you Diva - do you think I should start this sugar tox diet before my surgery? I was thinking it would be a good start to the whole program?? What do you think? I will only start the pre-op diet mid May, so I have time to get this one underway.

I sadly have gained weight, but only about 3 lbs. thing is, I fluctuate like it is no one's business!

I can't seem to get below 210 but it is my fault. I am increasing my exercise routine and revamping my eating habits. I need to stay on this site more because I tend to stay on track when I am here. I left for a few months and just lost it

I was sleeved back in August 2009 and lost a total of 50 kilos by June 2010 and have since gained and lost several times 6 kilos more. I'm on the up at the moment, and struggling.

I didn't realise that once you had started to drink gassy drinks again that it stretches the stomach which cannot then be reversed. I am able to eat huge quantities, most of the time, and graze all day long mainly because I seem to crash a lot!

Any suggestions what to do to get me back on the straight and narrow. I never did do any exercise and I won't kid myself that I will, so that isn't a suggestion, but I still have another 30 kilos to lose and so desperately want to. Any supplements, drinks, shakes or anything in the UK that anyone can recommend, or systems that work?

Desperate!

Emma

There are really no magic answers. Many people try to do liquids again, but find themselves hungry and unable to stick with it.

The best thing you can do is try to limit your carbs , eating only lean meats and green veggies. Go back to the basics of eating Protein first and veggies with whatever room you have left.

I am only 3 weeks out and I lost 25 lbs in the first 10 days and have regained 6 lbs and stayed there for almost a week. I don't know what I am doing wrong but I'm frustrated! I'm only eating mush and trying to be careful about fat, sodium, etc. I'm primarily focused on the Proteins and liquids. I don't count each calorie but I'm conscious of them. I've been walking between 1 & 3 miles each day, so I don't get why I'm in this holding pattern. Any ideas anyone?

Look up the "three week stall" You sound like you are in it. Most have this stall at around 3 weeks.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
