Feeling a little discouraged.

Recommended Posts

I am on the verge of trying to get the vertical sleeve gasctrectomy. I got referred to a surgeon from my doctor. I have also spoke with my surgeon back in May. I initially wanted to have to gastric bypass surgery, considering I have seen my sister go through with it, and I have a customer that comes into my job that has had it done. My sister was in a bad relationship. She was near 500lbs when she went in to have the surgery. After the surgery she got down to 190lbs, and looked awful. She had a large bone structure, so being at that weight made her look like skin and bones. My customer on the other hand looks amazing. She was in a size 24 pants, and now is in a size 10 and has maintained the same weight for quite some time. I have told her that she is my inspiration to have the surgery done.

My doctor put me on a 1200 to 1500 calorie a day diet. I followed the diet, I lost 18lbs altogether. On May 18th I had an appointment to see the surgeon. Since I haven't had any children and I plan to someday, he recommended that I have the VSG instead of the gastric bypass. After the appointment with the surgeon, I was told by the nurses in the office that I would be getting a phone call within the next few weeks to schedule an appointment to have all of my testing done that I will need. Unfortunately with the dietician, nutritionist, and excerice specialist I will need to come up with $420 out of pocket since insurance will not cover those expenses. Money is tight, and I have had other obstacles along the way. I have problems with my left knee, that is causing me to not be able to exercise which I would like to do again. They said I have Fluid on my knee, and I need to get it drained. Also, my surgeon's office that I originally visited closed on June 30th. So I have yet to hear anything back from them on when I can go in for the testing. If I figured it correctly I should be able to have my surgery around November or December. So with the office closing, and being rerouted to a new office, I have yet to hear anything back from anyone at all. It is really discouraging for me. I have had a lot of things happen within the past few months. I eat when I am stressed, and I have been under a lot of stress lately. The sad thing about this is that I actually got shingles because I was so stressed out. So needless to say I gained back the 18lbs that I had once lost. I am roughly 330lbs. And I am anxiously waiting for a call to come in to have my testing done. My question that I want to ask fellow VSG patients; is it unheard of to be my weight and want to be around 130lbs post op? Am I aiming too high, or in this case too low? Please someone I need advice! Preferrably something that can encourage me again!!!

You weight is good enough for VSG because I'm guessing you are female? So your height is around 5'2-5'8 so your BMI is approximately b/w 40-50. So you are in a great range to make ya wls dreams come through... Sometimes u gotta jus go with ya gut feeling

Don't get discouraged...money stinks but nothing says it has to happen out of the same paychecks. (I had to scrimp and save for these expenses too. UGH!) As for 130lbs...depends on your height. For me, I WOULD look terrible at that weight, but I'm 6'0" and built like a defensive lineman. LOL. I know my sister, who's only 5'1" was originally shooting for about 150lbs, but four months out she's already down to 162, so she lowered her goal weight down to where she'd like to be, which is about 120. It's totally doable!

Good luck to you. :D

I really hope thing get better for u. Im in a similar situation, im paying cash for my surgery and now im being told that my lab tests are gonna cost me a additional $2500!!! I wasnt counting on the test being in the thousands. Now my surgery date seems farther than ever until I can find a cheap laboratory to take my test :( So i know exactly how u feel. But dont worry we will get thru this obstacle keep ur head up :D

Sorry I never specified. Yes I am a female. I am actually 5'9". I guess being as tall my goal may be a little too low for my height. But I don't usually talk to my friends about weight so I'm not sure what 130 would look like. My bmi is 49 right now.

I would guess that at 5'9 150-160 lbs would be a more realistic goal.

Don't wait for them to call you. You call them. With all of your information being rerouted to a new office.... I hate to think where it could be. Lost? On the bottom of some pile? In some pile waiting to be filed? Self advocate and get the ball rolling. If you can only afford one thing at a time then so be it. At least you will feel you are working toward your goal.

Frame size and bone density, muscle mass...all these things will play a part. I'm 5' 7" and the last time I was 160 lbs (yes, decades ago) my father told me I looked ill. I was too skinny. Of course, I'm large framed, but I also must have extremely dense bones and a lot of muscle mass. 180 lbs is a size 10 for me...

All that to say, it's fine to set a "goal" but you will find even the most experienced sleevers have had to make adjustments to their "goal" when it becomes a reality. LilMissDiva is a perfect example...muscle mass to the max. I believe, a size 4 at the moment. Amazing transformation... And she's just one of them on this site.

Obviously on this site, you are going to find that we are "sleeve" minded for a reason. For me, it was THE only WLS choice.

Best of luck. Don't give up...be proactive and call like someone already suggested. I'm SO thankful for my sleeve and my new life.

One thing is for sure! You need to get your act together before you see the nutritionist and psych! They are looking for reasons to disapprove you..........especially emotional eating.

Keep at it! You are in control but you have to take it for yourself! I had a big wrench thrown in my wls plans. I had to have spine surgery because of bone spurs pressing on my spinal cord. When the doc told me, I was devastated and cried! I thought this would derail my wls plans. The next day, I organized and began pushing all my appointments up! Finally, on the day before neck surgery, I got it all done! My last visit with my primary is friday. After that, I will be submitted for approval for wls.

Get back on your diet and keep preparing. It won't happen unless you make it!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
