Pin holes in stomach due to oversewing???

Recommended Posts

I know there are different methods of surgery by different doctors. Has anyone heard of pin holes in stomach due to oversew? What is the difference between glue and manual stitch? :(

The primary means of closure is with surgical staples, which some surgeons use exclusively. Some oversew the staple line, but those sutures heal and scar over just like any other wound. Surgical adhesive is also used by some surgeons to coat the staple line as a precaution against leaks. It's up to the surgeon whether or not they use any method other than staples. I don't really understand your question, I guess. Do you think stomach contents are going to leak out of the holes the needle went through while oversewing the staple line?

I really do not know how they oversew, but doctors in the states usually only use staples and surgical adhesion. My fear is stomach content causing an infection in the abdominal cavity. I am going to Dr. Acerves in Mexico.

That's not true, there are plenty of US surgeons who oversew. BTW, Dr. Aceves did my surgery and I am still here, alive, kicking, and 3/4 of the way to goal! You will have a leak test and an x-ray to check for leaks, as well as a drain, so no fear.

Congratulations you are almost there. I hear nothing but positive news on Dr. Aceves. :) I will be joining the sleeve family soon. Positive affirmations put my tension at ease. Thank you!

I'm another Dr. Aceves fan. I was sleeved last Wednesday! I am home and doing great. I too was terrified of going to Mexico and was convinced at first that all these positive reviewers were plants or paid employees. But they weren't. When I got to the hospital it felt like I new everyone. I saw Yolanda and said oh your Nina's Mom and she laughed and said yes, that is my second name. LOL His entire team is wonderful. The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the wild ride from the airport to the hospital. You drive through these windy roads with HUGE boulders. Funny thing is I grew up in southern California, but had never been to that area! He is a very kind, very professional surgeon. Once you sit with the anesthesiologist and then Dr. Aceves I am confident you will feel assured. Cathi

Thank you for your reassuring words. Even though I am fully confident on Dr. Aceves and hid staff, I can not help to feel a bit apprehensive :( All this positive feedback is helping! Good luck with your recovery and keep me posted. I will be going the 29 July.

Hi,

Wow, you have me on that one. I think it must have to do with who your doctor is and how he puts your new stomach back together again. I had Dr. Aceves and he is an amazing doctor--top of the line when it come to VSG's. He checks you 2 different ways for any leaks before you are sent back home. I have staples and stitches and have NEVER had any problems.

So I think you want to have the very best doctor you can and ask all kinds of questions. I wish you a lot of luck. I know there are so pretty bad doctors out there so be very careful who you pick for your doctor.

Hugs,

Suzanne

Hi Eliza,

I am so excited for you. I know for a fact that you will NEVER regret your choice of doctors--he is fabulous and so caring. If I had the time I would go to Mexicali with each and everyone of you to easy any questions or problems that you might have. I am always just an E-mail away from you and if you need at ANY time I will send you a private E-mail with my phone number so that we can talk on the phone. I want you to know it is very normal to have a range of all kinds of feelings and emotions as you get closer to the date of your surgery. I had all of them. I was excited, scared, anxious and 2nd guessing myself over should I do this or should I not. I knew that diet and exercise just wasn't my answer. WLS was going to be my answer and I wanted it. So know that I am there for you 100%. Hugs and keep me up to date on what is going on with you.

Suzanne

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
