Going on vacation 2 1/2 months post op

Recommended Posts

We are considering a vacation mid October and my surgery will probably be at the end of July. Looking back, at 2 1/2 months post op, would you have felt up to a Disney vacation or are you still feeling not quite up to par?

I'm wondering if it would be smarter to wait until March.

Thanks for any advice!

I felt pretty good at a month out. I'd have gone to Disney then if I had the opportunity. Bring Protein Powder to mix with milk or Water.< /p>

We are going to Disney in October also! I will a little over 4 months out by then. I feel good now at almost 6 weeks so I am sure I will be fine by then. I think you will be ok. Pack Protein Powder to make drinks, I will be doing the same. As far as energy goes, I am sure you will have a lot more of it than you have now! I can't wait to go to Disney this time and not be fat! :D

I think you will do just fine. Your biggest hurdle will be creatively planning ahead for what you are going to eat while there. Have fun!!

Yeah, I was thinking about the dining aspect of it. It's going to pain me to $30 ish per person for me to eat when I know I'll only be having a few bites at each meal. I wonder if there's anyway around that like say when we go to Ohana and places like that when you pay per person and are not just ordering off of a menu.

Thank you to those of you who have replied to my question, I appreciate it! :)

I am exactly 8 weeks out today and feel like a million bucks! I have felt good since about 3 weeks out! I went back to work after a week. You will be fine!

Good luck on your upcomming surgery!

I'm 2-1/2 months out now and sleeve wise I feel like I could hike the Grand Canyon. My crappy knees say otherwise!!!!

As said before, take your Protein shakes with you and plan ahead. All should be well. I say, vacation while you can!!!

Another suggestion for eating out. See if someone will split with you. My daughter and I split meals often. Since we have both been sleeved, we can go to Red Lobster and get 4 meals for $20!! Also take plenty of Protein Snacks like string cheese, nuts, Peanut Butter, etc. and something to keep Water in. K

When I dine out, I order off the kids menu when I really just want to save money and I don't really want left overs lol but you could also share a plate with someone. Me and my boyfriend tried that last time we ate out and it worked out pretty well. Our bill ended up being 10 bucks! I think you should be fine for vacation in October, by 6 wks out you should be past most of the pain, if not all of it and your energy level will be alot higher because you will be eating solids again :)

I took a 2800 mile motorcycle trip 9 weeks post op. Had over 900 miles in the saddle the first day out. No physical problems whatsoever. Make sure you plan out your food and have stuff on hand or a plan on how and where to eat. For me the problems at that point were still trying to figure out the diet and how to do it while not at home.

I took a vacation to Disneyland ten weeks after surgery! Everything went great. First was the airplane trip without having to worry about needing a seatbelt extender. I was able to do all the rides no problem. Eating was the biggest hurdle. At the last minute I threw in some pre-made Protein drinks and string cheese in my luggage. I am glad I did since it was hard for me to get in my Protein. At some restaurants I ordered an appetizer and other times shared meals. I tried a lot of new protein food items that I hadn't had since surgery including shrimp, chicken strips, BBQ ribs and almonds. Some of it went great, others not so much. I never ordered a kids meal at a table service restuarant, but I understand if you have a WLS Card from your doctor they will let you order. I did order a couple of kids meals from the counter service places substituting apple slices for the fries. Worked fine.

One thing my Nutritionist told me was that I had to get accustomed to throwing food away. She said most overweight people will always finish their plates and find it difficult to toss extra food. I am finding that I am one of those people. My vacation meals came with all kinds of "extras" that I couldn't eat. Sometimes family members finished food for me, but often times I just needed to throw it away. That was harder for me than I thought it would be. Example: I ordered a Breakfast platter from a counter service restaurant and just ate the scrambled egg and a tiny piece of the bacon. The potato puffs and biscuit went in the trash.

We did eat at one Character buffet. I certainly did not eat my $36 worth of food, but the kids loved it and I am glad we did it. I ate one chicken leg, a couple of pieces of cold shrimp, a strawberry, a small piece of roast beef and one bite of pineapple cake. I was so stuffed I had to leave the table and walk around a bit!

Over the course of the week I think I averaged about 45 grams of protein a day rather than the 70 I was eating at home. It was also hard for me to get in all my fluids.

I am planning a trip to Disney World this October during the Food and Wine festival. I am thinking the appetizer portions of food will be just perfect!

I would NOT recommend postponing your trip. I hope you have a great time!

I was just thinking about this yesterday as Ohana is one of our favorite places to eat! I am going to call to make reservations and ask if I can be charged for the kids meal instead of adult meal. I know that some doctors give out cards to show restaurants that allow you to eat from the kids menu instead of the adult menu. I am going to ask my PCP about this. Disney is usually very accommodating so I have a feeling they will work with us on this!

I've not been sleeved yet, but I have a good friend who was sleeved 9 weeks ago. She just got back Sunday from a 10 Disney World trip. They went to the park EVERY day from open to close. I've been to Disney a few times, but I can't wait to do it post sleeve!! lol

I think you'll do great!!

I am 7 wks out now, on vacation and I am feeling great, but I had an extremely easy surgery and speedy recovery. I have been boating on fairly rough Water on the lake, swimming, walking, eating at big 4th of July cookout, it's been easy and "normal". I chose mostly meat/protein off the table, but did allow myself 2 bites of homemade ice cream because it's so rare that I get it. As active as I am being, I feel I will work those 2 bites off pretty easy ;)

I think you should be fine in that amount of time. Have a great time!!

:)

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
