One thing I've learned from reading here is that everyone is told different stories. It makes me realized how much medicine really is a "practice".

Here's what I was told about caffeine: The majority of your healing happens in the first 4 weeks. After that you are pretty much home free from the serious issues. Caffeine is a no-no because it's an irritant to the stomach. We are allowed to have it again at 60 days because their experience is that no one has any sort of upset stomach or stomach issues after that window of time.

My guess based on that is that if it didn't make you sick, you are fine. I actually know someone in my program who asked for permission to have coffee at about 7 weeks and was told that as long as he kept it under 2 8 ounce mugs he was fine.

Heck, give them a call and ask if you would be safe to have just 1 cup a day if you want it. They are there to guide you through.

(He wanted it for his Miralax...said it was the best liquid to mix it into...... )

I was told a month out that I could drink coffee as long as I could get all my Water in. Coffee is a diretric so when you are a new sleever you have to be careful with losing tooo much water. But if you can get your 64 ounces in with not problems I think you would be alright drinking one cup of regular coffee a day. I do I have been drinking a cup a day since the one month anniversary. I will tell you that your doctor may not want you too. But every doc has there own rules. My doc is completely cool about the caffiene thing..good luck

My doc told me 1 cup a day after the 1 month mark but only if you get in enough Water because I was told it also dehydrates you.

True. I was told to drink 1 extra glass of Water for every cup of coffee to prevent dehydration. It is a stomach irritant and can cause ulcers so be very careful. If you find yourself getting heartburn, don't drink any more, let yourself heal first.

Careful - you worked hard to break that coffee habit so now is the time to find something else. Maybe Decaf tea? If you are cringing right now try decaf coffee...but only if you getting in your liquids. Can you add milk to your coffee so you are getting in some protien and Calcium too?

So early out it is important to remember you have such little space that you need to make sure you save that space for Protein and liquids that nourish and hydrate you. So - are you getting in the recommend 64oz of liquid (coffee can not be counted in this formula) and 60-70 grams of Protein a day? If yes, try a small cup of decaf. No caffine cause you don't want to irritate or damage any work the surgeon has done.

Glad to hear you are doing well! Happy one month sleeve-anniversary.

I've had NO restrictions with coffee and at 9 weeks out, no problems with my usualy 1-2 cups each morning. All doctors are indeed different!

Ok so I get no coffee but today I have a 13 work day and tomorrow will be 4weeks post op:)

I had 3 oz is this going to hurt me?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
