i was between 600-800...last week i was told to up it to 1000, which is honestly hard to do, in between drinking Water etc

the highest I have been able to do is 900 and something. and still no movement.

Just trying to figure out how to up my calories and still eat healthy food, and stay low carb...honestly this is annoying

I'm with you. I've lost a total of 1 lb. in 2 weeks. This is disgusting for sure. I really don't count calories. I just try to eat the right stuff. I have to keep remembering that this is a common occurance, and this too shall pass. (it better) I'm going to try to exercise more even though my knees are killing me. I really need to break this stall.

Hey...I know how hard this all is mentally and emotionally, I wore the meltdown crown last week...lol. I was calling Meg my "sleeve sucks" sister cause we were so miserable with our grouchy sleeves. I can say my numbers look good, but I did not have any pre op diet. Sooo all my weight loss has been since surgery and it seems like most people lost quite a bit pre surgery. I lose about 2-3lbs a week, but I really don't watch calories. I got so used to not being able to eat flippin anything, it didn't matter how many calories it was. There was no way i saw myself getting to much.

Now a day for me on the menu is (today)...I ate a sugar free instant maple and brown sugar oatmeal for Breakfast (or I some days have chiobani yogurt almost a whole one)...lunch is whatever I bring or what the reps bring that I can make work. (today was boston chicken...a little breast meat...maybe 1.5oz, a few teaspoon tips of mashed potatoes and 2 pieces of zuccini...and I was FULL! About an hour later I ate a bite of the other nurses brownie...lol, and then we finally celebrated nurses day by all going to dinner. My first dinner out since surgery. It was Italian...I got a chicken and shrimp dish over risotto. I ate 1 bite of chicken, 2 shrimp and a few tastes of risotto...(haven't had rice..it was delicious) I was completely satisfied and have leftovers for a week...lol. I will try to eat about a half of a banana before bed (some nights it works some nights the belly says NO) I have been doing this to combat the charlie horses in my calf. I will say work is tough...yesterday it was subway brought in for lunch (i ate the meat out of a piece of sub) and last Thursday it was Moe's (GOD< I love Moe's...that was a challenge though) I had some chicken chunks with some guacomole and shredded cheese and tiny bit of salsa mixed up. I think most things can work if I'm creative.

I did this surgery to help me eat less and snack less...not to walk away from any food I may want. Did I need the brownie bite??? no, but I really wanted to try it...it looked really gooey. Before i would have had 2 brownies or a brownie and a big ole chocolate chip cookie...this time, a bite felt decadent!

I can say I do a lot of walking now. I got a pedometer and I walk about 3-4 miles a day just a work seeing patients. Constant up and down. I walk a little at lunch (time is tough cause I have a half hour and I really need that to eat right now) I try to walk at least a mile when I get home, even when i'm exhausted..ugh)

I have not been hitting my Protein goals, shakes make me so sick and eating has been hard. I may try some of those Protein Shots? Water...I have good days and bad days.

I hope this helps...I just subscribe to the SURVIVE this first few months theory right now.

Solid White Albacore tuna has been a favorite for me when I need a quick Protein fix.

I was struggling in my second month after surgery and was disappointed that I had only lost 7 pounds in three weeks. My doctor has this magical scale that tells you how much muscle, body fat, Water, etc. you have and what was happening is I was losing body fat but gaining muscle. In those three weeks, I had lost 16 pounds of body fat but I gained 9 pounds of muscle. All that Protein we take in feeds our muscles. Keep that in mind when the scale is not moving. Your body could still be losing weight (your clothes will tell you this) but since muscle weighs more than fat it will appear that you aren't losing anything. Since that visit, I haven't gotten stressed about the scale not moving as quickly as I thought it would.

Keep your chin up girl!

Hang in there Snacks...

GreenEyedMama makes an important point -- don't just rely on the scale to know if you are burning fat. How are your clothes fitting you? Feeling looser? In my checkered weight loss history I learned that my weight can stay absolutely the same for a two week period when I'm eating sensibly and working out regularly -- typically cardio and strength training, alternating upper & lower body every other day. At the end of two weeks when I measured my self I had lost a total of 9 inches -- including 4 inches off my waist and I'm an apple -- I don't have a waist -- my waist is wherever the elastic on my panties settles!

One other thing -- are you drinking Water? Water can really make a difference and get stuff moving. Oh yeah -- try to only weigh yourself once a week. I think the daily or many times a day hopping on the scale is just going to make you crazy!

Keep on doing what you know to do. Don't doubt yourself, your eating plan or your sleeve -- you are going to lose more weight.

A good Protein snack is pistachio nuts -- they have the lowest calorie content for all tree nuts, lots of Fiber, good fats and a 1oz serving is about 49 kernels. Almonds are great too...lots of healthy fats and lots of fiber (most of the carbs in almonds are from fiber so the net carbs are low).

Dry roasted edamame is another good one (how could I forget it!). 1/4 of a cup gives you 14 grams of Protein, 8 grams of fiber, only 4 grams of fat, and all for 130 calories. This is a really good one to carry around with you.

Wow thanks! Where in the grocery store do you find this? Or do you make it yourself?

What brand scale is that? I'd really like to get a scale like this. Thanks!

I am definitely getting my water in....

i know i shouldn't weigh daily...it hard...i work in a hospital, so there is a scale in my office, my bathroom, everywhere...i dont have one at home because of that.

But i am trying to keep a positive attitude. I feel better today!

Thanks

I was watching youtube last night and a sleeved gal was talking about how much she missed fried moz cheese sticks so she made a healthier and sleeve friendly alternative which is as follows:

1 package of ground turkey.

oregano

Whole wheat bread crumbs

1 baby bell light cheese circle

salt and pepper to tast.

She rolled up some meatballs using the turkey breast, oregano, bread crumbs salt and pepper. Then she cut up the baby bell light cheese into small pieces and pushed a small piece into the centre of the meat ball and rolled the meat around it. She popped it in the oven for 20 minutes on 400 and VOILA she had herself some make-shift cheese sticks! They sounded pretty yummy now and I'm not sleeved! when I finally do get sleeved (crossed fingers on July) I'm definately going to try that once I can eat normal foods.

I believe it is this one: http://www.tanita.com/en/sc-331s/. It is like $3,000 so if I want to find out what is going on with my body I just go to my surgeons office and use their fancy scale. It gives a print out so you can compare your results over time.

Also - you can get dried edamame at costco or in any health food store. Not all grocery stores carry it. They are a great snack and crunchy like a peanut.

The only place that I find in conistantly is costco, however I used to get it at Trader Joe's. Its lumped together with all the other dried nuts. In a pinch you call alo order it from Amazon.com.

Safeway sells frozen bags, and it makes a really good hummus-type snack, but I've never seem a recipe to roast it on my own.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
