Coffee and alcohol

Recommended Posts

I am 2 weeks out from surgery and am wondering when and if I can have a cup of coffee in the morning and perhaps an adult beverage? The nutrionist said you can't have an adult beverage for at least 18 months. Did anyone else hear this? I miss my coffee. Thanks!

I don't know about coffee but I I did wait 16 weeks before having an adult beverage. I drink pretty regularly but I am still pretty careful with beer....

I just went to a talk about "Drugs" and the sleeve by Dr. Denis Smith.

One thing he said was that intoxication is so much faster and lasts so much longer and even becomes worse after 12 months. The one thing I took away from it was to NEVER drive even after a sip.

Also if you take some meds and drink it can cause liver failure. There was a long list, but I think advil and celebrex were on it.

What? Liver failure when taking Advil???? Seriously?? Or is that if you take an Advil and take a sip of an adult beverage??

The program I'm going through (Kaiser) says to never have regular coffee (b/c of the caffeine, Decaf is fine) or alcohol ever again after surgery. They say that it can cause ulcers. That in some cases people have ended up in the ER b/c they vomited blood after trying alcohol for the first time after surgery. So for me since I'm not a coffee or adult beverage person anyway, I don't plan on drinking these things. These are on the never eat again list for me. Plus, why risk getting an ulcer. And I would think you wouldn't want the empty calories from the alcohol. Because every program is different, it surprises me that you're allowed caffeine and/or alcohol after a certain amount of time when my program says never again.

@ LA2ATL - you're never supposed to mix drugs and alcohol. Whether you've had surgery or not. Big no no!

Docs seem to be split regarding coffee and caffeine since they can up your risk of ulcers post-op (pre-op too actually).

Besides the calories many programs have you abstain from alcohol because there is also a higher risk of transfer addiction where people who used to rely on food for "a fix" start to turn to other sources for comfort. I'm talking about people who hated the taste of alcohol becoming raging alcoholics after surgery. Just like if you know someone who quit smoking and took up eating or someone who quit hard drugs and started smoking more.

A lot of drs are different about these things, and I've been wondering about them too. Especially coffee? ? I knew a lot of them said to wait a while on alcohol and I had also heard about it hitting you faster and harder. This is the first I've seen mention of never drinking either again. Hmmm. I will have to ask my dr too. I rarely drink alcohol but I love my coffee!

At the Mexican surgeon, their recommendation is to avoid caffeine except for Decaf -- which does, btw, have some caffeine in it -- and wait until after the solid food stage to drink alcohol. They're just not really all that concerned with alcohol especially after the stomach starts working properly which takes a while.

That said, one thing you should be aware of is that there are reports of leaks and other problems much later in the story, at nine months or near one year.

Leaks at 9 months to a year!?! Haven't heard of that before. I think i read about one that was somewhere 3-5 months out, but I haven't read of any further out than that. Can you provide any more detail, or links?

Thanks all for chiming in! I have started to drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning but in all honesty it's really about 1/2 cup. As for an adult beverage I still haven't had one as I don't really want the extra calories and I'm afraid of how it will "hit" me. It does allow for my husband to participate as he knows he has a designated driver. I am more interested in losing weight than drinking but a nice glass of wine on the patio after a swim is something I am looking forward too. rolleyes.gif

I think in the beginning they don't want you to have caffeine / coffee because it dehydrates you quickly and that's something that some people have a problem with. Alcohol also is a diuretic and can dehydrate you quickly, hence the hangover, add carbonation to it and your tummy and body are suddenly spiraling downward toward dehydration. BE CAREFUL! This is a whole new you and your shot at making your dreams a reality...make it happen and be proactive!

I never touch alcohol (long story there) but I drink coffee and diet coke all day and night. I have the two next to me at all times and it's a horrible habit and one that will be hard to break . I've started drinking a gallon (yes a whole gallon) of Water a day and I hate hate HATE Water but I want to be hydrated and ready for surgery and accustomed to drinking water afterwards. I've switched to caffeine free diet coke but still drink coffee. It's going to kill everyone here to drop those habits but we can do it.

(someone tell me I can have coffee when I wake up from surgery please please please! *prays on bended knees*) LOL

Renee,

someone posted a pic on FB 2 days post op, in the hospital, with their lunch tray: SF Jell-O cup, chicken broth and Coffee! I have high hopes for drinking coffee post op - even if it is just a few tiny sips!

I get the whole "caffiene dehydrates" but the ratio is like 2 cups Water for every 1 cup coffee. If we are taking maybe 5 sips of coffee, there shouldn't be any dehydration with the 60 oz of Water we are supposed to drink daily.

I am not a big alcohol drinker, so that part doesn't bother me :) However, if I want a drink post op, it will prob be something extremely light and only a few sips. I am not trying to pack the liquid pounds on :)

-- Liz,

I went to the Kaiser program in 2010 and was not told that. Did the Nut or the Dr tell you no coffee or liquor ever again? They did stress the crossover addictions and how liquor adds pounds easily.

The more I read online, the more I realize, every Dr and/or every Bariatric group is so different in their views. The pre and post op diets vary, the heal time, the leak rates and even the hospital times vary. But if your Dr says No.. you can't really fight that without proof. Something had to make him/her say that.

Good Luck :)

I'm 25 days out and just started drinking coffee again 2 days ago. Before surgery, I was a 4 mug/day drinker, but now I drink 1/2 Decaf and only 1/2 cup. Strangely, I still like the taste but I just don't want anymore than that.

I'm not much of a drinker but I do enjoy a margarita or 4 when I go out with my girlfriends. Looking forward to being able to indulge once again myself!

When I first looked into the surgery I met with a surgeon around here and the nut. They said that they didn't want me drinking any caffeine whatsoever for the first year. The same was true for alcohol. I have no idea what Dr. Aceves will say but will soon find out.

These things are not an issue for me because, I don't ever drink at all, haven't had a drink in many, many years and I rarely drink anything but Water. I love water!

Renee, please do not ask me to sneak you a cup of coffee after your surgery! I won't do it! :D

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
