Orange Juice after surgery

Recommended Posts

The nutritionist commented on my food log that orange juice will not be well tolerated after surgery. Is this true. I currently drink my Protein with 4 oz oj, 2oz Water.

How well did you tolerate orange juice, and how soon were you allowed to drink it?

I don't see my NUT anymore. I am a little over 4 months post-op. I recenlty added about 8oz of OJ every other day with my Miralax and have had no issues with the OJ. I think your NUT might not want you to drink it because it is just added liquid calories, not sure though. From about 2 months post-op, I really, really craved it for some reason. I never really drank OJ much before surgery. But, everything I crave now, I LOVE! So, I get the Tropicana 50... its 50 calories per 8oz serving, which is better than most. I would check with your NUT why she doesn't want you having it.

OJ can cause more acid in your stomach that we don't want!!! I don't drink it a lot but when I was about 5-6 weeks out I got REALLY sick over Christmas with a nasty cold so I was drinking OJ like crazy and I was fine!

As others have brought up above it is pretty acid AND contains a LOT of sugar. It is quite a few calories for the nutritional benefit. If you tolerate it, it should be OK in moderation - it might not be the WISEST choice of drinks though given the sugar and caloric content.

I never tolerated well orange juice unless very diluted. The same with other very acidic fruits. I will not try for a while and in the future, if I need to have it, I will continue to dilute. i get my Vit C from Ester-C daily. ;)

Can you have the crystal light classic orange? I know its not juice but its alot less calories and acid.

I had two glasses of orange juice the other day but I have to say I don't often drink it at all. I presume it is the high quantity of acid that can cause tummy upset. I didn't have any issues with my orange juice, after two glasses and I have bad acid reflux.

Oh! and I didn't realise how much sugar and carbs are hidden in orange juice! Actually in manufactured smoothies and juices there can be a lot of hidden sugars and it's best to limit these. I've started to swap my juices for pure Water as I'm fine with it and soya milk is amazingly low in carbs and higher in Protein so this is a bonus.

I am 6 weeks out and enjoy 4 oz of orange juice every morning. Remember, everyone is different and has different tolerances! When you feel comfortable, try a small amount!

My mom is almost 2 years out from Gastric Bypass, and she keeps at least 2 jugs of OJ in the fridge at all times.

My sister is almost 2 years out from GB also, and she drinks OJ every morning.

My aunt is like 9 years out from GB, and OJ is the only way she gets her protein- she mixes Isopure in with it.

This being said, I don't think orange juice can be so bad for a VSG if gastric bypass patients can tolerate it so well. Honestly I don't know the effects of it, but I just thought i'd let you know what I have seen. Good question, though. I think all doctors say different stuff about everything, but it would be worth asking around! :)

Orange juice is frowned upon as others have already mentioned is because of the acid mostly, next because it is one of your higher glycemic type fruits. Then to top it off, packaged orange juice has added sugar on top of it. :o

I had a swallow of OJ about a month out and it actually made my stomach burn a little bit. Scared the whoooop outta me, so I haven't drank any since. But, recently I'd say within the last month or so I have been enjoying half a medium sized orange from time to time. So now the acid hasn't bothered my stomach at all.

I will be 2 months out tomorrow and I enjoy about 2oz of OJ everynow and then. I try to limit myself because of the acid and the calories/sugar you take in when you drink it.. Over time it shouldn't be a problem enjoying it with your Breakfast. I know my NUT told me the other day to make sure I was getting in my juice as well as water/milk. Talk to your doctor about it and see what his/her thoughts are on the matter..

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
