Oh NO!! Did I damage myself?

Recommended Posts

I have been very hungry since my surgery Thursday past. Yesterday the nutritionist called me to see how I was doing. I told her I was doing mainly Isopure because I didn't like the Unjury powders. They make me sick. She said that the Isopure was fine for Protein but to have some other calories too, like broth and such.

So, I ate a Dannon Fit and Light Yogurt (in 3 separate servings). My dr. told me when I released I could have anything that goes through a straw. So I though yogurt would be fine... I called today to ask about it to make sure, because I had read last night that yogurt was a NoNo. And sure enough, she told me it would make me sick and stretch my pouch. Well, I told her I made one of the recipies in the booklet they gave me that had fat free, sugar free ice cream in it and was kind of thick so I thought yogurt would be fine.... She was very adamant that I can't have anything thick at all, very very think liquids only.... Protein Drinks are the thickest I can go.

Did I damage myself?

The (thicker) Protein Shake I made on Sunday actually made me really uncomfortable for all that day and the next... Did I ruin my pouch? Now I am really scared that because I was eating thicker things for two days I have ruined it!!

I thought yogurt would go through a straw.... Should I call my dr.? I have had this tightness in my chest since then.... But I thought it was probably my port area.

Please HELP!!!

If you have a tightness in your chest, you may be a little irritated and swollen in there, but I highly doubt that you have 'ruined' anything. Just continue to have thin liquids until you are given permission to move on (and even if you have permission, if they still make you feel tight in the chest, give it more time).

You should probably call your doctor and clarify on the yogurt though. Yogurt will go through a straw and is usually included in a 'full liquid' diet, which it sounds like is what you are supposed to be on now.

I thought it was ok too, but apparently when I called the nutritionist associated with his practice, I wasn't allowed to have anything remotely thick...

She was really pushing that yogurt was way too thick...

Oh, well... Only another week and two days until full liquids!!

My docotor has his patients move onto soft/mushie foods 48 hours after surgery. You haven't damanged yourself. You just felt what restriction with food is like.

I wonder why my Dr. has me do pure liquids for two weeks and others don't. Or more to the fact, why there is such a discrepancy in how and when Dr.'s let us eat certain foods??

I know once I started to eat an ounce or two of yogurt at a time I was feeling a lot less sick and less dizzy... I guess my plan now is to do Isopure for Protein and them maybe Water down a little yogurt with milk or something... for the rest.

I had the tightness in my chest like a golfball feeling and that was acid reflux. I am 14 days post op now and its gone. I used zantac and within 2 days it was better. I did the same thing you did and my pouch is fine. You should be fine too. Just stay on the program. I'm on mushies now and my restriction is gone from when I first had surgery. I go for my first fill on July 17th. Good luck.

hi O reiliy 76

my Dr. has me on a liquid diet for a MONTH. Then 2 weeks of pureed food then slowly introduce solids!!! There has been so many variations in plans, It is confusing for sure. I guess the best thing is to just do what your Dr. says and hopefully your results will be worth it.

3 days till surgery!!!!

Doctors are wide and varied in what they will permit. I doubt if any of them are wrong. Try your best to comply, but if you are eating what other doctors permit, you didn't ruin your pouch and band.

BTW - I hate Protein drinks. How about thinning a yogurt smoothie with milk? That would be pretty thin.

This will pass.

From my research I learned that all doctors have different opinions and plans for their patients. Some follow inamed guidelines, some make their own stricter rules, and some probably are in the band business for so long they just go based on experience which is probably that people can eat thicker liquids after a few days without problems.

I've heard so many people are able to have mushies after just a week and I'm gonna be on liquids for two weeks after surgery, I'm kind of annoyed and jealous lol. Best thing is follow your doctors rules because if you dont you'll have to tell him you're cheating and he may not like that too much.

Good Luck and please don't worry, if it went through then it's probably fine. Wait til you PB, I hear thats really bad.

Also, please note that I am not speaking from experience, all this is what I learned from reading LapBand message boards and websites.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
