10 days post op and not sure if its going right

Recommended Posts

So I am 10 days post op and I am wondering if everything is on track. I just started Protein shakes and I can only get about half down (so I will say its 28 grams of protein) and I track my calories on MyFitnessPal and I am averaging around 450 cals a day.

I know I'm early out so I'm not sure. I am moving on to Full liquids for the next 18-20 days, but I think I am not on track. I only weigh myself twice a week (Wed, Sat) so I don't know what the lost had been since Saturday (-7 pds). I started Your Shape Fitness yesterday and burned 100 cals (about 10 mins). I am starting out slowly, but my job is pretty stationary (at my home office) so I am trying to do something.

Any tips or suggestions?

It is not easy in the first few weeks, okay, maybe months. I was not able to eat alot only about 1/4 c. Only just this past week I have been able to get to 1/2 cup of food and finally getting around 700 calories a day. The only exercised I got in the first 2 months was walking. I was not cleared for anything else until 6 weeks out. Just keep contentrating on your fluids and Protein. I worked on getting my Proteins to 60 then worked on increasing the calories.

Hello everyone, I am 6 days post op and really struggling to get my Fluid and protien in. I know every doctor says something different but mine wants at least 70 gr of protiens and 6 glasses of liquid. After surgery that shake is so hard to get down and because I have to sip slowly its hard to get my Water in. I feel like i am drinking all day and most days dont get my third meal in. Any advice?

I'm exactly where you are.... Six days out and until today could barely get anything down and I feel sooooooo hungry :(

I've been just focused on getting liquids down so I'm not dehydrated and now will try to focus on Protein. Everything tastes terrible! Even the sugar free popcycles make me want to hurl because of the artificial sweetner. All the Protein powders I bought taste nasty, too. In the past, I could get anything down because I would put away a whole Protein shake in two drinks. Sipping is killing me and then it gets warm and gross.... This is a lot harder than I imagined it would be and I'm already dreaming of mushies!

Just do what you can in a day, focusing on Protein. The first month was real hard to get anywhere near the liquid or Protein in. I am at 3 months and it is much easier to drink now, but eating is a struggle to get enough calories. You are doing just fine. The first couple months is just about doing what you can while working toward what you are supposed to.

How many of us ever thought we would struggle to eat more??? Great feeling hah?

I can't stand artificial sweeteners either so am sticking to Water, broth, and tea for my liquids. Also have found two Protein powders without artificial sweeteners. One is call BioChem (Natural). Got it at local coop health food store. 22 grams of whey protein a scoop, flavored only by natural vanilla bean so it goes ok with milk. The other is Resource Beneprotein, made by Nestle, has about 6 grams per small scoop. I had to get it at a hospital pharmacy, but you can get it on line. Not much taste at all to that, mixes with yogurt, Soups or milk. I also talked to my dietician and since I am not diabetic they did not see alot of harm in adding a tiny bit of chocolate flavor to my shakes (calories and carbs are minimal for a teaspoon) and it can make it easier to get them down. Problem is right now I am so sick of all the dairy!

I'm using the Biochem Natural as well! Not big on the flavor but now that I'm getting ready for full liquids I can mix it up with something other than Water and experiment a bit. I've been living on All One Weight Loss Formula Cocoa. It has only 1 gram of sugar, and 100 calories but it's only 14g of Protein (but a lot of great Vitamins and minerals as well). However, it's so thin and easy tasting that I've been able to drink them 3-4 times a day and getting closer and closer to that Protein requirement!

I just bought GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Unflavored but haven't tried it yet. I don't usually buy from GNC but I read great reviews on this product and it's 21 g protein / 2g sugar and 110 calories. I read that it mixes very well and tastes decent so I'll be using this and the Biochem to mix in with things for extra protein.

Not sure if I mentioned the Soup in this thread but check out Pacific Natural Foods organic carton (like the soy milk cartons) Soup (in most health food stores). My thin liquid stage got a LOT more interesting when I opened up the French Onion! Looking forward to Sunday (full liquids) to try the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato and the Butternut Squash!

If you can get half down, you're doing good. It will all come in time. Just sip best as you can and try to sip some Water or watered down juice in between.

I really think that you are right on track! I am 8 months out and the first two months I really struggled to get in everything the nut wanted...like Protein, Vitamins, Calcium, and on top of all that LOTS of water! It will come with time and what you are experiencing sounds very similiar to what i went through! Hang in there it does get easier with time and healing! :)

Hi,

I have not had the surgery, but am looking into it. What I'm wondering is why is it so difficult to get a drink or shake down just after surgery and the month or so that follows? Is it hard to swallow because it hurts or are you simply not hungry and getting full quickly? Any other info would be great. Thanks!

From my experience (I'm into day 9), I have good and bad days. There's no pain associated but you get full so fast that it's easy to 'over-fill' yourself and then you get the gag reflex. That's the negative reinforcement that makes it hard to drink enough. I have a problem with drinking Water so I've been adding a diet peach ice tea snapple package to my bottle of Water and I'm getting about 60 oz of water down a day now (doctor said any liquids are better than dehydration). I have no appetite so if you're hungry, it's probably that you are not drinking enough water.

1st visit with Dr: April 6, 2010 weight 407

Pre-op weight: 380

Sleeve Date: Jan 31, 2011 with Dr. Mario Almanza, Tijuana, Mexico

Current Weight: 355 (9 days out)

The main reason it is difficult to get a drink or a shake down the first weeks after surgery is becuz your stomach is very very swollen from the surgery, so it mite take several weeks for the swelling to go down. That's why your surgeon/nut want you to sip your fluids becuz IT WILL HURT IF YOU DON"T.

Have you tried the Isopure zero carb waters: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2612796

They taste like Vitamin Water. I really like them and they are NOT thick and gritty...... thin as Water. That way you could get your water and Protein at the same time. My doctor said they were good for all stages from pre to post-op. He also suggested the green tea Isopure for sensitive stomachs. One 20oz bottle gives you 40g of Protein.< /p>

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
