Serious Stomach Acid Issues Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I know this is a really old thread but I thought I'd make a suggestion for future generations.

I can not drink plain Water. The moment I do, I get a horrible burning pain in my chest and shoulder. Prilosec did nothing to help. I realized it almost immediately and squirted Mio into my bottle and like magic the burning went away.

I had my Gastric Sleeve 11/30/2010. I experienced some heartburn but didn't think much of it until recently. I was diagnosed with gastric, stomach, and esophageal ulcer mid December. Since then they have gotten worse instead of better. I am on two meds to control the acid and coat my stomach before eating in hopes they will heal. This is my first incident since the surgery. I have lost 100lbs and hope this issue is resolved quickly. It seems people are always looking to blame the surgery and say, "I told you not to have that surgery."

I had surgery10-31-2011-------I added carafate to my list and it has helped, but still feel like gravel in my esophagus, hope it is not an ulcer. Isnt that quick to get an ulcer? And you are so right, someone is always thinking I have messed up having the surgery. I have lost 52 lbs, but have been staying the same now for about 2-3 weeks,. I have problems eating the food for a diet, and am eating soft foods for my stomach.Cant help but worry about losing the weight.

I am sorry for all of us going through this. Before I had my gall bladder out in Dec, I was on Carafate for 2 weeks - didn't make any difference for me. After getting my gallbladder out, my problems got worse for a while, not better. My "hunger pains" changed to like a burning feeling going up all into my throat. Infact, my stomach hurt pretty much constantly within the first 2 weeks. I even went to urgent care, because it was effecting my work and sleep and nothing helped. I tried 2 PPIs a day, then switched to Zantac or Pepcid, tried Tums and tried Malox. Tried switching to only spring Water, avoided wheat, etc. Nothing worked, so I got off all of it. Stress seems to make it worse. The best I felt was when I went out with friends and had good time, with a good meal and a little wine. They told me to wait a month and then have a PH study done. I am now 2 months out and I am pleased to say my pain is still there, but comes and goes in short bursts. Eatting usually helps. I still am waiting to have a PH study done. I've talked to other gallbladder removal patients out there, and it can take up to a year to have pains stop. However, I still have HUNGER PAINS, which I guess is never normal. That is the whole point of WLS surgery,is to get rid of the hunger. Unfortunatley for me, I still have this and don't know if it is caused by Bile Reflux or what. It would be great to forget to eat because I am starting to gain weight again. I wish I was one of the lucky people who forgets to eat. My pain is reminder.

Very interesting reading about everyone here having Acid issue post VSG surgery.

I had surgery on November 28, 2011. About 6 weeks postop I started losing my voice and had this thick (mucous) feeling in my throat that wouldn't clear when I coughed. I called my Surgeon's office who put me on Protonix once a day. I then visited my regular doctor who referred me to a Head and Neck Specialist. I was given a test where they put a small scope through your nose and into your throat. I gagged becaused I couldn't swallow and passed out!!! Needless to day I was diagnosed (tentatively) with Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Per the Specialists instructions, I've bought a pillow wedge to raise my head at night while I sleep, a cool mist humidifier and have increased my Protonix (PPI) to twice a day. I still have had not relief. So it looks like I will be referred to a Gastroenterologist.

Everyone who has acid issues on here, please keep us posted so we can all help each other get through this.

Take care......more to follow!!!!!!!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
