@sleeve me plz: I found alot of my information on www.longhaircareforum.com. [You don't have to join you can LURK" until you make a decision, just can't post until you join!] Those ladies on there are AWESOME!!! I grew my hair out for 6 months, I could not take it any more!!! I recruited Ladyvelvet [my Sister] to come over and give me my big chop!!! Honey was she reluctant!!! Anywho . . . long story short I have never regretted a single moment of being natural. If your hair is shoulder length then it will not be a big adjustment for you!! You will be surprised at how strong your natural hair is cause I know I was!! Good luck on your healthy hair journey!!:D

BTW: you can look at my fotki to see my hair progression: http://public.fotki.com/2sweetnsugarland/

I have locks and I am 3 months post op and have lost no hair, but its probably because I do not brush or comb my hair. So right now natural seems the best way not to loose hair.

I've been natural for almost a year. I still have about 2 inches of relaxed hair on top. I wear my hair in wash and go style - usually with some cute headband. I tend to get about an inch cut off at a time so it's been the same length for awhile. I couldn't bring myself to cut it all off at once.

I have locks and I am 3 months post op and have loss no hair. But i also dont comb or brush it. So natural has worked for me this far.

Hello Ladies. I've read your posts about going natural and I'm very curious. My hair is currently braided and I haven't had a perm in about four months. Without the braids my hair is shoulder length but I have no problems cutting it short. I need some guidance. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I have locks and I am 3 months post op and have lost no hair! But I don't have to brush or comb it therefore it has no extra stress on it. Natural is the best and has worked with the sleeve this far! Thank God!

Hi All,

I think this is wonderful. I know we are all the same but we differ sometimes when it comes to health conditions. I know some medical conditions are more prevelant to Africian Amerians. I am fairly new on the site, and just beginning this journey. I have still not decided on a doctor. I have attended (4) seminars, and now I am trying to make my decision, (based on # of surgeries performed, hospital, how important is the center of excellence award, pre-op, post-op, group mtgs, reviews by other patients of the doctor, and the list goes on). I would like to stay in touch and see how we are progressing throughout this process. (DOINGITFORME)

Hey '2sweetnsugarland. Thank you for all of the info. Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I was taking a couple of college courses and was a bit overwhelmed. I will definitely check out the website and your fotki. Good luck with your surgery.

Just want to say hi to everyone. I too am in Atlanta. I am just starting this whole process so I won't be having surgery until early 2012, if I am lucky. I don't have the insurance right now, but will be changing once open enrollment rolls around in Nov. Right now I am attending seminars trying to find the right surgeon. I know that the insurance I will be switching to requires 6 months of supervised diet and exercise visits, so I will start that with my PCP in June. I look forward to getting to know you ladies.

Hi All! Thought I check in.... well I am about 14 weeks out and only down 53 pounds. I am happy with that though I thought it would be more. But I was having a talk with my girlfriend who said that a slower weightloss is what I need not to bring any sideeyes from my job (I work in public health in the obesity and physical activity field), to get my husband use to my changes (he has not complained that I am "too thin" yet.) She think the slow weightloss allows him to get use to my body in phases. He likes big women. He maaried me at my highest of 331. My hair is holding up. I have been keeping it braided up with either tree braids or a sew-in. When I do take it out, I deep condition and let it stay ot for about a week to see how or if it shedding. My skin look okay (my breast area is the worst). I told my hubby that I will propably get a breast job at the end of my journey ;-)

I just came off a 9 day stall, so yes stalling does keep happing for me at least once a month. I haven' t worked out in about 23 days by doctors orders. I have a seperate condition that is demanding no physical activity until after my second round of meds are completed and I have another chest X-ray.

So overall I am pleased. I know this is a marathon and not a race. My next overly ambitious goal is to be at 200 pounds by my daughter's 1st birthday July 6. I have 28 pounds to go. I don't think I will make it but shooting for it gives me motivation. I go back for my medical check up in 7 days, so I hope to get approval to workout. If I do, then I have a chance.

hope you ladies are doing well and feeling great. Have a blessed day.

Hi everyone, I will be 41 this year. YIPPEE. I am just starting the process but hope to have the surgery this year. My hubby is not so enthusiastic about it but I am doing this for me. "All of my life" I have had boobs and butt. When I was 11 my grandmother passed and my mother and I were both wearing 34C’s can you imagine being the only girl in the 4th grade with boobs. I skipped training bras so for these to go, I am okay with that, it will allow me to wear a lot of styles I have not been able to because of my "girls"…..fast forwarding to today, I am a 40K. Yes, I have to pay good money to tame these "girls". J I have my initial consult on this week along with a nutritionist appointment. I am hoping because I have seen my PCP for weight issues for the last 18 months will count and I won’t be delayed too much. My only concern is I have fibroids, borderline anemia and I had a major accident almost 3 years ago that left me with a titanium rod in my leg. I do have a co-morbidity of hypertension so maybe one will cancel out the other.

ATL-I am so glad you started this topic as I have questions about hair loss—I am natural and keloids, if anyone has had to deal with those.

Thanks for posting everyone—it helps us newbies.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
