where are the heavyweights?

Recommended Posts

Congrats to all who are on your way to good health!

Regarding the skin issue, it's true that heavier weight (and older) people and especially those who carry most of their excess weight in one area need to adjust their goal weights because certain tissue (overly stretched skin, depleted fat cells, stretched out connective tissue) is not going to be lost with diet and exercise. My DH carried most of his weight in his tummy area. He lost 175 lbs (6'3"). His "tummy tuck" removed 8 lbs. A relative lost over 200 (5'3") had 5 lbs removed from her stomach and 16 from her thighs and if she were to have her arms and butt done, no doubt there would be an additional 20ish lbs. I'm sure once I lose another 20 lbs a lower body lift would remove 20 lbs. Setting a goal that doesn't account for our excess skin is not going to leave us with the muscle mass we need.

I am a heavyweight. I topped out at 350 in Jan 2010. Now, 110 pounds lighter I still have a good 90 to lose-how much of that is loose skin I can't say but I have a huge panni. Funny, I just noticed that I had moved from "Super Morbidly Obese" to "Morbidly Obese" and am closing in on plain "Obese". Ugh! I hate these labels.

In my head, I am still at 350 in so many ways. Sad.

Me too. My top weight 385.5 on May 21. 366.5 day of surgery June 29 and 338 August 2 at first month postop. Don't know current weight as I promised myself I would only weigh once a month and focus on working the program. I'm 62 so I'd be thrilled to get down to 160 or 150 even though I'm 5'4" and should be more like 134.

You guys crack me up! I love this thread! I'm right in there with y'all, EXCEPT I'm 6'0 tall !!! I DONT need to hem anything! I have a 36 inch leg size (I know!! all legs) have to add material! hehehehehe. . . . I at my heaviest was 350+ (give or take a pound or two) at surgery I was 332, and now am 225 lb. . . doctor wants me to weigh 170, but I think my bones weigh more then that! hehehe. I don't ever remember weighing 170 lbs. . .as a kid we had no scales, and at 12 years old i went to the doctor and weighed 222 lbs. . . so for me to get to 170 is interesting considering that i am 3 lbs away from what i weighed at 12???? But now it's become a personnel thing. . . lets see how much i can lose and lets see how i'll look at that weight???? UMMMMMMM very interesting. . .

I am 5'8 (perhaps a teense under) and at my highest I was 508 pounds. I had surgery on 8/20/10 and was 479 the morning of surgery. I am currently 464. Right now it seems like a pipe dream to think of being 170lbs, but that is my eventual goal. For now I am setting smaller goals to reach and eventually by hitting those smaller ones I will get to the final one.

I think I was a normal weight the day I was born, the day after is another story though. I have always been overweight. I have not been under 310 pounds since I was 20 (now 40). At 14 I was 240lbs, so I just can't even imagine what 170 would be like, or 270 for that matter, but it will be fun finding out.

Another Heavy Weight here! Around 350 right now (maybe into the 340's....haven't weighed in little bit). Hope to lose 150+ when all is said and done. If I got to see the scale be below 200 I would jump for joy and yell it from the roof tops!:confused1:

I didn't "weigh in" here--see the ticker for the dastardly starting BMI of 51 and pre-pre-op diet weight of 331. I've got 150 or more lbs to lose. I must confess when I see people getting the surgery to lose 40 or 50 lbs it kind of pisses me off. I know it's not rational, I know it's not kind, and there's nothing personal against the people--but the truth is that I get this pissed-off feeling about it. I can't even articulate why. Maybe because I was told by insurance companies that I didn't qualify so many times and it doesn't seem fair that they did (I realize they might self pay). Dunno, guess I'm a head case lol.

Waiting for surgery date…still undecided sleeve vs. RNY

I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
