Post Op Clears to full liquids

Recommended Posts

I'm supposed to get 70 grams of Protein a day. How do you DO that with Clear Liquids? I can't imagine that broth has very much Protein.

The only thing I can think of is to buy a case of Isopure Plus and drink 5 a day.

Tell me, oh experienced sleevers!

You're just recovering now! I hope everything went well, Steve.

I, too, have a tough time with getting in all the protein. I am on full liquids and only have {maybe} 2 non-clear liquids a day. I made sugar/fat free pudding and added two scoops of Protein powder in, which made the whole batch about 78g of protein. Of course, the kicker is that I can only eat about 1/4 c. at a time so I'm only getting about 7g protein in each serving. I'm trying to drink 40g Isopure but they're 20oz and I'm not loving the flavors.

Fudgsicles have a decent amt for what they are and a good quick snack.< /p>

I'm going to order high protein meals and HOPEFULLY start getting more in. I am REALLY trying to prevent hairloss!

I was allowed to have yogurt and Jello 2 days after surgery. By the second week i was allowed to have full liquids, as long as they were smooth and blended. Some Doctors apparently are a lot more strict than mine was. I also could finish a cup of jello that soon, remember that it is basically Water. If you do a test, hold a spoon of jello in your mouth for a minute. It will melt. That shows you how fast it dissolves in your stomach. It is then emptied from there fairly fast. I was told that as long as i didn't have nausea, the jello and liquids could come as fast as i was able to drink them. I just learned not to take big gulps- it hurts, and traps air in the stomach- ouch!!

I know what you mean! I just had one of those new Jello pudding mousse cups. Didn't like the texture afterall and it seems to have upset my stomach...then again, it's the first thing I've eaten all day. Before that I was just drinking Isopure all day today and Water and I wasn't hungry but knew I should put something in there before heading to bed. Now it's upset. I'm going to have a spoonful of mashed potatoes and see if that calms it a little.

I definitely does. The pudding I made was delicious and the stuff I bought pre-made just isn't a winner. I told my husband he's welcome to it (he's a big fan of the yogurt whips and I don't like the texture at all - I should have known!). the mashed potatoes were delicious - the 2 bites I could eat!

I have these awesome things called potato pearls, which are basically dehydrated mashed potatoes but they're already seasoned and have amazing flavor. They're SO good. Much better than regular instant mashed potatoes, in my book...although, I did have reg. instant mashed potatoes the other day and tried to add flavor without using butter...so I used a dash of coarse sea salt and a pinch of CUMIN! The cumin was awesome. Perfect amt of flavor.

Def. no more Jello Mousse for me.

Oh yumm!!! I want to try that!! I've been experimenting with using different sauces on the foods i can eat. I was craving barbeque sooo bad so i decided to mix some BBQ Sauce in with a little mashed potatoes. Sounds weird or awful but it was so good. I could probably drink the stuff plain though!!

Most surgeons consider a Protein Shake made with Water instead of milk a clear liquid.< /p>

My surgeon says 10 days clear, then 10 full..... at the moment its taking me an hour to get a Protein drink down (allowed in my clears at its Optifast with water).....but I'm just going with how my body tells me.

Must get my Fluid intake up tho..... off to get more juice!!

Tiffany - surgery was last Friday and I'm on the mend. Staples come out today. I had little or no pain. Just tenderness where the staples are. My question is this. HOW do I possibly get in enough Protein and Water?? I think I did good on liquid yesterday, but Protein, not even close. I do NOT want to dehydrate, that is my main concern at this point. I am sipping on a Water with some New whey protein in it now, but it will take all day to get the whole 'bullet' down. Ugh! Any hints would be appreciated. I am hoping to go to full liquids today and not have to wait the full 7 days. (Friday) We'll see!! I am NOT hungry at all.....it's amazing. I LOVE my sleeve and Dr. Davidson!! Yay!

Can you walk when you get that urge to eat? I just had to get out of my house, and I sat on my porch to distract myself.

Your stomach isn't too big, maybe you heal quicker than others, that's a good thing. Your restriction may change in a couple of days, just eat slowly, and enjoy. Head hunger is not easy to overcome, but it does get easier.

Hang in there, just a few more days. My surgeon requires 14 days of clears (I had to do 17) and then 14 days of full liquids, and then 14 days of mushy/soft solids.

Come here when you need a distraction.

NTVTXN- I'm not Tiffany and of course won't have the genious reply that she will have for you :001_cool: But I can give you my 2 cents... in the beginning it's much harder to get your fluids and Protein in because your sleeve is very swollen. I had the same problem and actually was afraid that I was going to be like that permanently. Not to worry- the swelling WILL go down and it will get easier. Try doing this- instead of drinking clear liquids- replace your liquids with a Water based Protein Shake. Most surgeons will allow that coming out of surgery. I was allowed my Protein Shakes as soon as I returned home. Instead of sipping on water, I sipped continuously on protein shakes. It made it very easy to get my protein in, in addition to the liquids. It also gives you the added electrolytes and Vitamins your body needs to heal right now. What i found that helped me, was to put the shake in the freezer until it got very cold, or pour it over ice, as the cold shake helped go down faster and really soothed the stomach and the inflammation.

I hope this helps! :wink1:

NtvTXN....I was told to not even worry about Protein the first week. I wasn't allowed Protein Shakes until day 5 and they had to be mixed with Water. In fact, at my one week post op appt. the nutritionist told me I was trying to be an over-achiever and that they do NOT expect you to get it all in while you're on Clear Liquids.< /p>

I'd concentrate on staying hydrated and slowly work your way up to building your protein intake.

Thanks Jillian! I got the staples out today and the doctor told me, "nothing for the next two weeks that won't go through a straw" - so I questioned him a little, and he said if it is thin enough to go through a straw and NO chunks or lumps, I can have it. With that said, off to the store I went, I came home and got plain Greek yogurt, a banana, skim milk and came home! I am currently drinking a Protein shake made of half a container of Greek yogurt, half a banana, 3/4 cup of skim milk and a packet of Stivia. Yum! Sip, sip, sip!!

I appreciate you taking time to respond!!

Hi 'Goodlife' - I worried a little about Protein, but I worried MORE about staying hydrated!! I had to make a choice. The bullets of Protein and the protein powders....ugh, I just have a hard time, and that first day I wasn't getting protein OR liquid. Thanks for responding!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
