Anti-depressant

Recommended Posts

I went to my pre-op today and was told that for six weeks I can't take the anti-depressant I'm on because it can't be crushed. I had talked to my psychiatrist before the appt. and I was able to get something that dissolved for my other med. I'm so frustrated because I've tried so many and that one really works. Is anyone on an anti-depressant that they can take the first 6 weeks after surgery?

I swallowed pills starting 1 or 2 days after surgery. I did break one in half a couple of times and then just took it whole from day 3 on.

I have also tried many different anti depressants and really wouldn't want to change. I think it can really mess you up and recovery from surgery is enough.

I am currently taking wellbutrin and effexor. I had no issues swallowing them at all.

Maybe try to get a 2nd opinion.

My doctor did not restrict me from swallowing pills whole. I really don't know why some doctors do that. I haven't had any problems at all swallowing pills. . . good luck

I have been taking all small pills (think M&M or smaller) since the day after surgery. Vitamins are normally larger, so I did chewables for the 1st month. Absolutely no problems for me.

I take Pristiq, and for a week after surgery, my PCP gave me capsule form of something else to dissolve in Water. let me tell you, i would have been better off getting nuts for the week. That crap was so nasty it made me gag. I called my surgeon and told him what was going on, he said to just try the Pristiq and wait about a half hour to see if i had any pain. I did not so I was good to go. Probably could have cut them in half for the days right after surgery. I was able to take Synthroid with no problems from when took my first sip of water!

I work with mental health and I would not condone of anyone stopping antidepressants during a period like this. It is a mojor stress on the body and mind. So many changes and we will be without the benefit/comfort that food has given us. Six weeks without anti-depressant? If I could do it for six weeks, during a period of stress and do not have a major relapse I would not start using it again.

Do not take chances, tell your doctor about other sleevers who did not have problems.

take care

Antidepressant drugs may be augmented in the treatment of depression or other mood disorders by non-antidepressant drugs (such as lithium carbonate) which have been shown to boost the antidepressant effect of a main antidepressant treatment. Dextromethorphan (found in many brands of over-the-counter cough syrup) as well as the opioids tramadol (Tramal, Ultram), and pethidine/meperidine are contraindicated with all SSRIs as they are serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) themselves and the combination could cause the potentially fatal serotonin syndrome. Many SSRIs inhibit the metabolism of dextromethorphan as well, further adding to the risk.

Thanks

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
