Swallowing Pills?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm 2 weeks post-op today and wanted to know around when can I start swallowing a capsule instead of mixing it in food. My doctor put me on Actigall in order to prevent gall stones when I go through my "rapid weight loss" time. I haven't been taking my medicine everyday because the taste is extremely bitter and makes me want to gag...

I'd call your doctor and ask. I think I waited 3 months before swallowing pills based on my doctor's recommendation about a specific pill I asked it I could take. He may have okayed another pill earlier though.

I would check with your doctor and tell him the way that capsule is making you feel. I crushed pills for about 4 weeks and used a 1oz plastic shot-like cup, mixed it with about 1/2 oz apple juice, and drank that down and immediately sipped some more apple juice to wash away the bitter taste. After that my surgeon told me that as long as I was able to swallow pills it was OK to do so. It seems that opinion differs from surgeon to surgeon...go figure!

I will be cleared for pills at 1 month out. Right now I'm taking a very small Protonix pill by mouth. My other Vitamins are chew with the exception of B12 which is sublingual.

Isn't it amazing how different every program is?

I take mine the same way but with Crystal Light instead of apple juice. Its fast and the taste is gone with the second sip of Crystal Light. Some pills are nastier than others. I take 5 things! 2 for BP, Nexium Mups, Tamoxifen and Lexapro. I crush them all in a little pill crusher I got at the pharmacy for under $4.

I'm a month out and probably take all but the Nexium Mups whole but I'm not messing with success just yet.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
