4 mts post op 10 weeks pregnant!

Recommended Posts

so i thought it was time to start my own thread to keep you all up to speed on what the hell is going on!!!! (esp those who are looking to get pregnant after surgury right!!)

I would love to.......***sugar coat it*** but...... it ain't gonna happen sorry!!! I will however start this thread at the begining and keep it running with updates.

As you can all imagine i neally had kittens when i found out i was pregnant!!! you could of knocked me over with a feather especially when we were not trying and i didnt even know i had fallen (unlike last time where i was slightly sick from day dot with heart burn to boot) i was 6 weeks when i found out and from about 7 weeks till today (almost 10 weeks) i have been sick ALL DAYYYYYY EVERYYYYY DAY

Last week i ended up in hospital with fluid/dehydration issues, as the nausea feeling was not alowing me to eat or drink!! i just couldnt do it!!! if i did i would be spewing straight away. it got to the point where i was spewing bright yellow bile as there was nothing there to go!!! 2-3 mouth fulls of anything was enough to send me running.... even the things that i thought i could tolerate were sometimes a big NO GO ZONE! (you know the deal, head says yes belly says no!)

the penny finally dropped tho. i wasnt eating enough!!!

my dietition gave me extra Protein Drinks to cure the dehydration and bump up the fluids (which was sooooo much easier to get in) BUT in doing so there was nothing for my stomach to work on, so when something come into my belly it felt like a total violation, and the reject botton would be hit! after comming out of hospital i forced myself to eat (even if the food was outside my guidelines). cheese and toast were a safe bets and unfortunatley so was choclate (which i thought i had kicked) ((as i take another bite :w00t:)) nuts have been a good small snack too! toast in the morning and toasted cheese sandwich for lunch are safe as houses (go figure hey!!!)

I did tell my surgon that i was pregnant and he congratulated me and told me to look after myself. it turns out that, that concept is actually quiet hard!!!

I might also add that i have still been losing weight!!! in the 9 weekly weigh ins i have had over the last 10 weeks, i have lost 8KG/17.5 Lbs

YIPPY

Keep you all posted

cheers

Ange.

Wow Ange - I am so sorry you are having such a hard go of it with your pregnancy. I would say if you are losing weight, eat whatever the heck you are able to eat and get to stay down - the cheese is good protein; and I'm sure if we look hard enough, we can find something beneficial in the chocolate (hmmm .... is it at least dark chocolate?) Nuts are good Protein too.

I hope as your pregnancy continues your stomach is able to handle more of a variety of foods; however, if not, stock up on cheese, nuts and chocolate!

I'm new to this whole thing so bare with me. I'm thinking about having the gastric sleeve done but of course I want to have another baby, not now or anytime soon. I have a 2-year-old & don't want to have another one for at least another 2 years. I'm kinda stuck though. I don't know if I should have my surgery now & get healthy with my weight loss or if I should wait until after I have the baby. I am currently scheduled on 12/29/09 for all of my post op work.

I have read about so many women having babies after the gastric bypass surgery but since the gastric sleeve is so new, I just don't know if this is the right move for me. I read your original post about the complications you had. Do you think this is due to becoming pregnant so soon after you had the surgery or is this something I should be alarmed about?

I spoke to my primary doctor about this and his only point to me was to have the baby first and then the surgery. BUT his reasoning had nothing to do with the health of the baby. His reasoning was that what if I pay for this surgery & then have the baby & then gain the weight back? Well good point but part of me is thinking "what if" I never have it done & could have had a great pregnancy without being overweight? I'm just torn on what to do. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars & then gain all the weight back but I also don't want my feet or my hips to hurt when I stand because I'm carrying around a ton of weight.

Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Marci

Welcome Marci! First off I want to say congratulations for your desire to become healthy for you and your family. Secondly, I'd like to say I very much disagree with your primary doctor. Sorry that the following is sort of long winded.

There were many things that began my journey of researching WLS, but the biggest was my desire to start a family. My husband and I tried for a year with no luck. I then went to a fertility specialist and one of my husband's first questions was, "could it be due to her weight?" The RE, poo pooed my husband and it turned out I was riddled with fibroids that had to be removed. After my open myomectomy where they barely managed to save my uterus (I actually have a mesh screen attached) last January, we were scheduled to go back to the RE and proceed in May. In March my husband sat me down and talked to me about how concerned he was about my weight and getting pregnant at that weight. Of course I didn't want to hear it, but unbeknownst to me he had been researching the issue and when presenting me with studies and facts of obesity it was hard to ignore. Although many obese women give birth to healthy babies and remain healthy themselves, like I'm assuming you've done yourself, there are just a lot of risk factors involved. I was quite upset because it seemed like something I wanted for so long was once again out of my reach. But I eventually did have to agree with my husband.

This summer sometime I came across a study (trying to find it and link to it, but will edit later), that showed how much better mother and baby did after wls, compared to the pregnancies they had before (it only looked at woman who had babies both pre-op and then again post-op). In the article, or maybe another one, it also concluded that the children born after wls were less likely to be obese unlike their siblings born before mother had the surgery due to womb environment being healthier (it was a pretty significant percentage in my mind). I will try to find these links and add them in later.

As for the sleeve surgery working after pregnancy, I don't know why it wouldn't. Part of our stomach is permanently removed and although it will stretch some, if treated properly shouldn't stretch that much. I just believe it will take a lot more willpower than in the early post-op months, but the tool should still be there.

Good luck with your decision!

If you google, "pregnancy after wls" there is a lot of info (here's one):

OAC * Obesity Action Coalition - Pregnancy after Weight-Loss Surgery

http://www.weightlosstriumph.com/weight-loss-surgery-reduces-pregnancy-complications-for-mother-and-child.html new link

I'm having difficulty finding that study; I believe I originally read about it in a summer edition reader's digest article and then looked it up from there, sorry.

thankyou for all your well wishes people, ohh and due date is 6 July!! It seems that all the books i have read say that most sickness starts to clear up around 12 weeks soooo now at 13 weeks, i only get the odd sick feeling so i can conclude that the sickness was just one of those pregnancy deals that happens with or without WLS. YAYYYYY I have been having trouble exercising.... (and have stopped same as last pregnancy tho... another 12 week symptom, being tired) as i feel theres just not enough energy to go around but have still dropped 10kg since actually falling pregnant so happy days are still here.

Hi Marci

My baby is 14 months old I and thank god i had this surgury beforehand. there is NO WAY UNDER THE SUN i could keep up with my baby, and feeling all the general associated pregnancy hick ups at the weight i was before!! there is no way i could be keeping up with baby. I am hoping that by the end of this pregnancy i am still way more mobile than i was with the first, as i was able to sit and lounge around and relax at will. this time i dont have that luxury. i have dropped 100 odd pounds since my highest weight and think i am better equiped to not only keep up with my daughter but also avoid some of the joint pain i suffered last time around!! (fingers crossed and time will tell)

I think the hardest thing for me so far is going to such extreme to lose weight and just getting my head around getting smaller, enjoying losing weight and considering the concept of maybe buying some smaller clothes to now having to wait/ put on hold that dream. my boobies are already getting bigger and filling out and my 'new' belly shape is also changing. At first i was totally devistated that i was going to be getting fat again, but now i just think hey...what the hell, im gonna lose weight, therefore not get anymore stretch marks. ha!!! lose weight gain baby at same time. ***laughs*** sounds greatttttt in theory...

hey deedee

I hope everything sorts itself out for you!!! wow! any plans in near future now that you are almost at your goal??

I also wonder about this baby and its size at birth.... it was an unanswered question that was going around my head. my girl was born 9Lbs 14oz so it will be interesting to find out on the day if my habbits have had any impact on birth weight. dont they say that babies get heavier with each pregnancy?? (that maybe for mythbusters) ohhh well the experiment beakers are out and time will tell!! lol

cheers

till soon

Ange

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
