bleeding gums anyone?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had issues with their gums bleeding after surgery? I'm almost 2 months post-op now and I'm having some major bleeding when flossing my teeth. I take really good care of my teeth and go to the dentist every 6 months. I haven't had a cavity in over 10 years. I'm taking a multi-vitamen and Calcium supplement daily. I noticed this increase in bleeding gums about 3 weeks ago. It makes me think it's a nutrient issue??

Well now my gums feel irritated and my teeth hurt. I think this is because I've been chewing more since my first fill last week (although I spent 5 days on liquids). Maybe I'm overdoing it on the chewing. I think I'll eat soft foods over the weekend and see if that helps.

I knew I hadn't ran across this topic before but I thought I would give it a shot. I will definitely be checking with my dr. Thanks!

Just to put your mind at ease, my mouth acts up when I go very low carb. My gums get sore and bleed. This is just something I have noticed about me over the years. Check with your dentist for sure.

I work in the dental field and I usually ask about new meds and Vit C intake if bleeding has just started,

Hormones can also play a huge role.

Once they are sore it will take a while to calm down!

Good luck

Interesting that you bring up this topic. I've noticed recently, than when I eat high acidic food, like pineapple, the roof of my mouth and upper gums get inflamed. It never used to happen, and I've noticed a bit more bleeding when I floss. I wondered if it was a nutritional deficiency, but I'm doing everything I'm supposed to; high Protein, Vitamins, etc. I have dramatically cut down on carbs, but I would have never thought that could have anything to do with it.

Maybe by body is rebelling against the loss of candy, Cookies, cake & sweet rolls?? Yeah, right....

I have a dentist appointment next week. I will ask about this when I go in.

Well, if hormones have something to do with it, then that's got to be the answer for me. I'm completely estrogen depleted (total hysterectomy last year), and cannot take HT for more than two weeks; turns me into a crazy person. I don't eat as much fruit & veggies with C as I did pre-band, so I may have to add some extra to my regime. Thanks for the info :)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
