What can I do to get comfortable-3rd day post op

Recommended Posts

I'm just got home today after 2 days in the hospital. I'm very uncomfortable and seem like I'm still very much inflamed. What can I do to get comfortable? And can I sleep on the side the port is on? Please help.

You can sleep however is comfortable. I actually slept on my stomach from the first night after surgery. Some people find sleeping in a recliner most comfortable. You'll have to do some trial and error to see what's best for you.

Do you have a heating pad? If so, you may find it helps the discomfort.

Walk as much as you can, it will help work that air out of your abdomen sooner.

Hang in there, it does get easier and soon!

I slept on my back for the first week, it hurt too much to sleep on my side. Others have said they were able to sleep on their side, on their stomach etc. I would sleep however you're able to comfortably. I had a lot of painful bloating and took chewable Gas-ex which helped. Heating pad also helped but I had to put it on the lowest setting. I did have a lot of pain and it hurt to breathe. I took pain meds every 4 hours for the first few days. By the second week though, all the pain and discomfort were gone except for one spot that was stitched to my muscle. Took almost a month for the stitch to dissolve. Hang in there, it will absolutely get better. :)

I'm a side sleeper and I go left and right all night. I did sleep on my port side but you have to kind of lift your body up and gently ease it down and stay there versus sliding and shifting on it. I still feel my port under my skin when I settle down on my left side but have no pain there anymore so it will get better!

I slept in my recliner for the first few days, and plenty of pain meds! But a few days out and all was well. I just takes time.

Omg thank you all soooo much, I guess you guys have the idea of how much I was freaking out. This helps so much! As for the pain meds, did any of you have to smash before taking? Scared if I don't, it will get lodged in my throat. It's absolutely disgusting! I also had plication, have any of you?

Give it time, you had surgery. It took me like 16 days or so to feel normal again.

Fast forward nearly a year and 50lbs less, I'm awesome!!!

The pain pill will go do without difficulty. I did not have a problem . I was nervous too. I was able to swallow it whole without breaking it in half. The doctor also told me it would not be a problem, but if I was nervous I could score it. But it wasn't necessary.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
