Should you recommend surgery to obese oeople struggling?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the responses. It helps me to see most people do not think broaching this subject is good form. Only in response to questions is what I am reading.

Of course I knew 7 years ago,Before my journey into WLS that I was interested in something that appeared to last. Rather than taking off 30 lbs. gaining 32. Etc. I would have liked to hear some options. But I'm hearing that is only me. Any thoughts?

HI

Your intentions are wonderful, but weight, weight loss, and weight gain are very personal and intimate subjects. You can never know how someone else will interpret what you say, good intentions or not. Telling someone how they can lose weight is also telling them they are not "ok" as is, unless they have asked for your advice.

You have a good heart; just pay attention to being sensitive from the other side :)

Frankly speaking, it depends on the persons health and condition, some people can sustain the surgery , some cant, as in many cases the surgery was done 2nd time also, i say a blog on stumbleupon regarding the surgery posted by some beliteweight , but the blog was awesome. It has explained most of the doubts regarding the surgery and their conditions.

I have always been totally open with my surgery. So people feel comfortable talking to me about the procedure. I do think it is absolutely fine to say how well it has worked for u and it could possibly do the same for that person. It's all in the way you say it.

I see people everyday struggling to loose weight and I want so much to tell them my story....but the unwritten rule in a gym is that everybody has their personal space and one should never invade it....

If I happen to make eye contact, I may give them a quick "Thumbs Up" as to say good job, keep it up....but that's about it.

I quess it's true everywhere else....people are entitled to their "Personal Space"

I agree with B-52. WLS is something people have to come to on their own. The journey is tough and it really needs to be a decision they make for themselves. They need our empathy, not our advice!

Absolutely not! That would definitely be crossing the line and when and how a person deals with their weight problem (or any other problem) is for them to decide. And I don't believe that surgery is for everyone. It takes dedication and a willingness to make sacrifices and permanent changes and not everyone is willing and/or able to do that long term.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
