I started the day getting prepped at 6 am and before I knew it I was being wheeled to the car heading home by 8:15 am!! Felt great, wide awake and very happy I made this leap. Pre-surgery jitters? Dozens. Thoughts of backing out? Hundreds! I was lost, confused and full of self-doubt. And let's just say it....I was scared. Complications, death, you name it. What saved my soon-to-be-small butt was reading everyone else's story explaining their surgery from start to finish. It helped me get past the unknown surprises and showed me what to expect. The minute they rolled me in, I was all thumbs up. Anxious, sure. But ready to start my journey!

My wife and two teenage boys (my frogs as I call them) have done a great job making me as comfortable as is possible given the fact that I've just been drugged, stabbed 4 times, prodded, poked, lassoed and stitched in under 2.5 hrs.

But you know what? Aside from the pain tonight, some moderate, some a bit more, it really wasn't bad at all. Would I do it again? Without question. Tonight will be a rough nights sleep, no doubt. But the rewards will far out weigh these little discomforts.

I hope this helped someone? Maybe not. Either way, I'm more than willing to share the specifics of my whole day from the surgery center to my pillow laden bed for recovery. Message me if ever you have a question, fear or panic attack. There are some really good mentors on here and I will NEVER pretend to be as wise as they are. But I am here, for what it's worth.

Congrats to all of us for at least doing something to control our own destiny of sorts. I'm proud of you all!!

It is going well! I had my first fill Wednesday. It was not the most pleasant experience, but not the worst either! I slept the first night with the help of the Lortab he prescribed. I also had to sleep in my daughter's bed as mine is tall and I couldn't climb in! I can't wait to hear your progress! I'm down 22 lbs as of this morning. What part of the valley do you live? I'm in San Tan Valley/Queen Creek. Let me know if you have any questions...I may have some words of wisdom...or if not wisdom, I have a lot of words I can share!

You're the bomb. So funny, too. I'm down 20 lbs so far. About 50 to go and then just try to maintain from there. I live in the Tempe / Ahwatukee area. I'm sure I will have tons of questions, so stay tuned! I'll be looking forward to more of your posts. They're fun to read. Hope all is well and good luck to us both! -Dave

Awwww... Thanks for checking in on me! I'm doing quite well for a wimp. (What guy isn't?). Some port pain still but that's to be expected and I have Mr. Lortab on call when needed. Getting tired of shakes, Jello and other liquids but I get to move on to mushies in a couple days. Woo-hoo! Now, if I can just figure out how to fit a Big Mac in the Nutra Bullet.... How are you?

I am doing great! I tried my hand at Chipotle yesterday and was happy to know I can eat it and not get stuck! Now if I could just get them to give a much smaller portion and not charge me for the whole thing! Haha!

When is your first follow-up appointment? They are really tight on booking so be sure to schedule them in advance.

Aug 20th! That's six weeks in. Is that normal? I have a feeling I'm going to hit that bandster hell everyone talks about and starve, thus putting pounds back on. How long are the appointments? I don't want to get stuck there for another hour like before. Glad you're returning to a normal diet. It gives me hope! I do wish you the best, Msapp. Keep smiling, even though it might just be gas! (: -Dave

I had surgery 6/20 and my first follow up was 7/24. I can tell you I felt like I was in the green zone up until the 2 days before I went in. I found out I already had 4 cc's in my band from surgery. Chances are you do too. I did NOT feel like I was in bandster hell at all. Just watch your portions and eat when you are hungry. Also, make sure to eat your Protein first. I feel fuller much longer as long as I have good protein!

My appointment took a bit longer than normal because the nurse I saw missed/couldn't find my port! She had to call for back up who consequently had no issues with finding my port. I wish I could remember the nurses name as I don't want her again! When she numbed me and then stuck in the big needle for the unfill/fill it hurt like a son of a gun! The back up person was amazing...didn't feel a thing.

I return to my teaching duties Friday and therefore have no choice but to keep smiling! Ooh, one thing I've noticed is an increased loudness to any burp that exits my body. My special Ed students will LOVE this, especially the one who has a disability that causes her to belch loudly. Good times, good times!

How funny. Can you burp the alphabet, though, that's the question! So after you got your first fill could you notice a difference in eating, hunger and feeling full or satisfied? Did it make you eat less than before the fill?

I felt satisfied much sooner after my fill. It also made me eat slower and smaller because I am terrified of getting stuck.

I cannot burp the alphabet, but I can rattle the windows! Haha, just kidding....or am I?

Good to know, thank you. And good luck getting back to teaching tomorrow! I'm back in the swing on Monday. Can't wait, going a little stir crazy.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
