Does anyone else believe they are addicted to sugar/flour

Recommended Posts

I know for a fact I am addicted to processed carbs. I can eat a piece of bread or candy and literally feel my mood lift. Last year (preband), I tried to quit processed carbs. It worked for about eight months and I lost about 40 pounds. The battles I had with my brain were way more intense than the battles I had when I quit smoking. I fell off the wagon with a thin slice of birthday cake. I gained the 40 pounds back in about 6 weeks.

I was banded in the beginning of April and have been processed carb free for eight weeks now. I'm feeling alone with my battle against these carbs. I often think people think I'm just a crazy fat girl, looking for excuses. Does anyone else suffer from a sugar and/or flour addiction?

I completely am addicted to carbs , when I stop eating refined sugar I feel better , more energy and coming off of them is worse then caffeine for me, I am irritable agitated and have unbelievable cravings , its lasts about two weeks then I am fine but I really have to stay away from them, so I get it completely

I don't think I'm addicted to carbs but I definitely am refined sugars/sweets. I can eat bread, Pasta, etc without a problem. But sweets? candy? Baked goods? Holy heck, it can get super ugly if I'm not careful. I've thrown out entire cakes because after having a single piece I knew if I didn't get rid of it I'd eat the whole thing before bedtime. I made the mistake of buying Reese's miniatures for Easter treats this year- mistake because Reese's is a huge trigger food for me. I ate a ton of those stupid things before I even realized it.

I have very little self control when it comes to refined sugar. I have to avoid them entirely.

Well it's nice to know I'm not alone. I got very frightened when not eating certain foods felt exactly like not smoking. For me, its the processing and refining of wheat, sugar and corn. Try avoiding corn, it's impossible. I can eat wheat and corn just fine, in their natural state, but if it's been processed, I go completely haywire. I got a lot of support when I quit smoking and even when I quit diet soda. But for some reason, I get a lot of resistance on the carb thing. Hence why I ate the birthday cake mentioned above. Thank you for the support. I really needed it.

The most rewarding journeys are the hardest to traverse.

Sugar addiction is very real. Perhaps talking to a therapist or going to an OA meeting may help. Good luck to you!

I think we all have this problem that why we need the band. I crave salty crunchy things now nuts and crackers...did the nuts last week and had the kids hide the crackers this week....my next fill should take care of that I hope.

I wish this was talked about more. These refined carbs are in everything, especially corn. If I eat something with refined corn, even something as small as a bite of yogurt, I will be hungry for days. And when I try to make sure that I don't accidentally eat it, people treat me like I'm a wacky health nut. Which is funny considering I'm 224 lbs.

Salty isn't my thing either.

On weekends when DH eats Breakfast, he cooks himself up some poached eggs and bacon. Bleach. There is no way on earth I would ever want to eat that. Give me my bowl of all bran buds with a spoonful of my home made muesli (oats, nuts, seeds, mmmmmmmmm) and a tiny dollop of thick cream any day.

I love my good, wholegrains carbs too. I don't overeat those. It's just the sugary, refined things hat send me off on a binge.

CanCan,

I find myself in the same situation as you. I think what has helped me the most is to limit the servings I have available to me. I have also found new things to replace bad sugars for my "sweet tooth" I recently discovered that if you cut up bananas, drizzle them with honey and then put a little cinnamon on them, it helps a ton! It is just what I need and tastes fantastic! Then last months I did the 21 day sugar detox challenge (for your ref.: timreviews.com/21daysugardetox) ...it was so hard in the beginning, but in the end it became easier to resist sweets. The cravings, if any, are now so slight that they are easy to resist. Even coffee holds no appeal for me now as I like mine with sugar.

I think the most dramatic change I experienced is that I actually ease to sleep at 11 p.m. and stay there without waking up several times in the evening. Before I used to sleep at 2 a.m., wake up several times at night and get out of bed at 9 a.m., feeling cranky and exhausted.

Good luck.

Thanks Selma. Does it give you recipes and stuff? I have to be completely processed carb free or I'm off on a binge. The bananas and honey sound fantastic. I'm afraid to do honey right now but I may try it later.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
