Hi this is my first post, so glad to find these forums!

I am 35 years old. 5 ft 2 and 257lbs. No co-morbitities. My surgeon wants me to get clearances from a cardiologist, pulmonary specialist, do a sleep study, and an upper GI scope.

Are these normal requirements for all surgeons? I appreciate his concern for my health, but wonder if given my relatively good health if all the testing is necessary. Especially the sleep study given that I have no sleep apnea symptoms. (Of course I will do the tests as required)

Thanks for any input :)

Yes these are normal! I had to do them as well. I her my last appt next week then ill be scheduled for surgery. But yeah don't worry!! I think it's good that your doc is taking all the precautions necessary to ensure this will work for you and you'll be healthy during the process!

I do not remember having to do all that, but I really trust my doctor and his practice and I would have done anything that he requested.

Yes this is normal. I did 6 months of supervised weight loss classes with a dietician, psychiatric evaluation, heart test then insurance paperwork was submitted. I was approved.

For my surgeon I had to go to the pulmonologist, have a sleep test, blood work, upper GI test, see a nutritionist and the psych study. I only had to see the nutritionist once and if I want I can continue to see her after the surgery. I really did not enjoy the sleep test, but the rest were fine to do! For my insurance I had to meet with the surgeon for three consecutive months. On Monday I go for my Pre-Surgery visit. I'm still scheduled for the 29th!

Did all of those plus saw the dietitian for a few months. I failed the sleep test but since the band I stopped snoring. Good luck. The band is the best thing u have done for my health in over 25 years!!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
