I was told by dietician to get use to the idea of taking Vitamins for my whole banded life.

Why don't you get some and start taking them? Also are you drinking enough fluids?

Best Wishes!

They make Vitamins specially formulated for bariatric patients for a good reason...our nutritional supplement needs are different from an individual who has not had WLS.

Why would you stop taking them? Not a smart move by any definition. Vitamin/mineral deficiencies are cumulative over time, so you may not be aware of a deficiency related medical condition developing until you have a problem to deal with.

There are a number of websites devoted to bariatric nutrition. Why don't you visit one or more to locate a brand of supplements that will fit your needs? It's so much easier to preserve health than to regain it...

Carole, I'm the world's worst about taking my Vitamins I will admit that and I suffer the same, tiredness and fatigue and I know I need to remember to take them everyday. My question to you and I know you know because I love when you post, your the expert, you mentioned that there are websites out there that carry vitamins for bariatric patients, what would be the difference in these and a standard run of the mill multi vit. from Walgreens/Walmart? I'm just learning all of this and only 4 months post op so any insight please let me know. Also, any websites that sell the bariatric vitamins that you would share with me would be appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Donna

I take chewable Multi Vitamins and chewable Calcium with Vitamin D for better absorbtion. I have to set up my alarms so I don't forget to take them, I do whatever it takes to stay healthy and not have a deficiency in the near future.

I didnt think I needed them - have always believed that a healthy diet provides what you need.

However i failed to account for how much less than normal bandsters eat. I lasted six years before falling pray to Iron deficiency - my ferritin levels were zero- although circulating Iron was low/normal - which means that I had totally and utterly used up my body's stored iron. My oncologist went on to check my B12 - bottomed out which again means that I had been literally years with too little. I also had a bone density scan after I broke a rib simply adjusting the knob on a spin bike so my calcium/magnesium/D levels have also been too low. Now so as not to alarm anyone, I also had chemotherapy, an ileostomy and an early radiation induced menopause so my hormone levels were out of whack also and there were other factors at play there, but the point being all my body STORES were used up too which means I'd been deficient since before cancer.

Needless to say, there are supplements in my bathroom now, but I *STILL* fail to remember to take them!

Just a note on iron - its very irritating to banded stomachs - I got a stomach ulcer from the pills sitting in my pouch - so now I have to have IV infusions - I'd gotten my levels back to normal and then over the past six months without supplementation they've dropped again.

First let me emphasize that I am not a nutritionist by profession, however I do care about my health and well being, so I have done some research to better understand the differing needs of the bariatric patient as opposed to someone who has not had WLS.

The "nutshell" of what I've learned is that due to limited food consumption, it is common for bariatric patients to become deficient in the "B" complex vitamins, and also what are referred to as the "fat soluble" vitamins of A,D,E, and K as our diets typically limit fats to a high degree. You need fat in your diet to absorb the fat soluble vitamins. "B" complex vitamins are Water soluble. Biotin is in the group of "B" vitamins, though it is actually also referred to as a different letter Vitamin, which one I can't recall.

Deficiency in Vitamin D is especially critical to avoid as you need enough Vitamin D to properly absorb Calcium. Long term deficiency in calcium will affect the health and strength of your bones.

We are supposed to take calcium in the form of calcium citrate, as this is a higher quality form of calcium, however I have never been able to tolerate it. I was given permission by my surgeon to take a higher daily dose of calcium carbonate (Caltrate with D) with Vitamin-D added as a chewable substitute.

I also take the Celebrate Multi-AGB brand chewable multi Vitamin in blackberry flavor, which are sold through my surgeon's office where it is less expensive to purchase them than online. Their website is celebratevitamins.com.

Another good source of bariatric products is BariatricChoice.com.

I hope that this information will help...please remember to take your supplements...just like "cheating" with diet compliance, if you don't take your vitamins and calcium you are harming only yourself...

Best wishes and good health...

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
