Did you have a lot of periods of shortness of breath? It's hard to breath a lot more these days. I'm 6days post op. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you.

not sure about the shortness of breath (i also had the hernia repair). it hurt to take a deep breath at the beginning and up to about a week post op. but as my friend tkw said, call the dr and let them know and give you the ok (to relax) or come in for a looksee.

i am sure its nothing but better to be on the safe side.

I had hernia repair and lap band. I did not have shortness of breath but if I inhaled my lung kinda felt constricted. When I had my first post op visit. The dr notice that I had a lot of gas, she also deflated my band( in which at that time I did not now it contain any fluids) after that I was good. When is your post op visit..if you continue to have problems call the dr.

Oh I sure did this past Monday.....Had surgery on Friday with hernia repair....

I was fine after surgery, then 3 days later, after driving ( I drive a standard so it adds more pressure) my son to school, came home bathed, washed hair n did some light house keeping. I started having SOB....I had to take deep breaths in other to be well oxygenated. I called my surgeon n sent me right to the ER....After spending 12hrs in the ER...and ran lots of tests...no clots, they thought it could have been a Pulmonary Embolism....X-ray n CT scan came out clear.....so I was sent home on bed rest...as long as I rest i'm ok with the SOB, but if i do any kind of huge movement, it comes on again...even something as simple as brushing my teeth, I get SOB.....Surgeon said it happens at times, has to do with the repair and the diaphragm...

If you are experiencing that, I would suggest go to the ER just to be sure it's not a PE, if all clear, rest yourself and take your time....

Good luck n keep us posted!!!

If the problem continues I would ask for a chest x-ray, you could have pneumonia, it is common after surgeries with intubation.

I was banded and had a hernia repair on August 23rd, I have not had any issues with shortness of breath but many other patients that have had the hernia repair complain of this. Consult your physician to make sure it's normal.

Yes i had shortness of breath for 11 days. My hernia was very large in the top.. I panicked about the breathing... Try to relax. I seen doc yesterday, he said it takes 4 wks to get over surgery. I had no sholder or neck pain til day 8!! No gas at all..then here it comes. It takes a while for the gas to bleed over into your intestines... So when we think we r better..there is still some poking around.

To help my breathing i went on slow walks. Best of luck

I just had a band and hernia repair on 9/10/12. I did have exactly what you are describing for about a week- shortness of breath, heavy feeling in my chest, inability to take full or deep breaths. It was frustrating but I called my Surgeons office and the nurse assured me it was normal- especially from the hernia repair. It took over a week for it to go away. I tried not to over exert myself but even sitting down, doing nothing, it was hard to take a whole deep breath. It will pass soon.

I had shortness in breathe, mine was were I couldn't take that deep breathe in, so part of my lung collapsed, so I would advice you to go to the er, it could be something serious.

Definitely an ER situation.

But for the record, I couldn't get a deep breath & have a low respiration rate anyway. I was sent home with a thing to practice every hour. The day after my surgery I got annoyed with it and remembered something. My pre-admission nurse had told me to take my asthma inhaler to the hospital in case I needed it. I did, but never took it out. I did two puffs on that & was "cured" within the hour.

Waiting for surgery date…still undecided sleeve vs. RNY

I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
