Am I Crazy To Get Banded?? Only 25-30 Lbs To Lose.

Recommended Posts

I was just banded 10/26- and since I was "only a 32 bmi" I went back and forth trying to talk myself into it and out of it. What finally made me decide to go for it is lookin at all the skinny b*****s getting their nose jobs and their boobs done- if they're gonna spend twice what I'm payin for something like that, then I damn sure can afford the cost of this and avoid a lifetime of stress and worry over my weight. I went up and down dramatically about 10 times. I feel so fortunate that I was able to do this and now (hopefully) will never have to worry about that again. I'm ready to actually live my life without the constant shame and thoughts of food and self loathing. It's exciting. I dunno- just kinda writing what I'm thinking here- so might sound a little shallow. Totally worth it to me!

Hello, honestly I think everyone has a bit of vanity when opting for this type of surgery. Yeah...being healthy is on the mind....Yeah....I want to live longer....Yeah....I want certain ailments to disappear....BUT at the end of the day, I want to turn heads for looking good not for the amount of jiggle on my rump! Do it if you feel it is necessary for you, vanity or not ITS YOUR RUMP!

I hope no matter what you choose, you are doing well. Whether you choose surgery or not ultimately is your decision of course and your reasons only need to be justified to yourself. The only thing I might suggest since you seem to be very active, is have you tried weight watchers? Maybe just switching up your diet will help you.

Best of luck to you!

janleefran, I'm sorry you cancelled.

I just have to comment. Lot of advice thrown out here and some of it doesn't seem thought out to me.

Surgery is serious, but 25 to 30 pounds is serious also (especially at your height). Certainly the success of the lap band is obvious. Read just a few posts and look at the tickers to see that time and time again people who couldn't lose weight on their own are having incredible success and keeping it off. It's not uncommon to see folks losing over a 100 pounds time and time again.

Seeing a support group was the final straw for me. It was shocking. I couldn't believe how skinny these people were. Some of them had been 300 and 400 pounds and now look emaciated. It was insane. Between the support group and researching online, there is no doubt in my mind that this tool works and it works for most.

So, you are 41 and have struggled with this problem for a long time. You exercise and try to eat right. It seems to me you are a good candidate if not one of the best candidates. You have already shown that weight is a serious issue for you and you are willing to work at it after the surgery.

Do you really want to be overweight the rest of your life? Remember, the statistics show that there is a 95% chance you will be. Do you want to fight those odds?

For me it came down to this... Roll the dice on surgery or be over weight the rest of my life.

I'm also low BMI (30, but 29 now with optifast). I have surgery scheduled for March 15th. Can't wait. I'm 43 years old and am sick of gaining weight slowly year after year.

I've tried to beat that 95% statistic time and time again. Why would should we keep beating our heads against a wall like that?

In my opinion- I would NOT. If I was that close to goal, I would work with a personal trainer and a nut. for better good guidance.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
