How Do You Get All Your Protein In Besides Eating Meat?

Okay, here's my delima: I cannot stand hamburger meat since surgery, chicken gets stuck unless it's canned and I make chicken salad, I eat a lot of fish (and I'm getting tired of it), shaved turkey or ham, cheese (low fat), cottage cheese, I may eat a half of an 8" Quesadilla with low fat cheese in it. I'm getting burned out on my meals as I eat these things every day. I was wondering how you guys get your Protein in in other ways besides meat? I went to the dr last week and had .25cc's removed, he thought I was too tight, I'm 3 months post op by the way and before he came in his nurse blessed me out over drinking Protein shakes. I only drink them occassionally like before church when I'm in a hurry and it's simple and quick but she said that the only time I should be drinking them was pre op and post op. I felt like a scolded child, guess I should have said something to the dr but didn't. He such a sweetie and great bedside manner. Anyway, off the subject, back at hand, I haven't tackled pork chops or steak, scared to as if chicken gets stuck so will that. Open for suggestions. thx

I also like Jerky, Greek yogurt, string cheese, and tuna or chicken salad. I do have Protein powders and even those Protein Shots, but don't really use them.

I can pretty much eat any meat as long as it's not too dry, so that's not an issue for me. I usually cook for myself, so I have a lot of Trader Joe staples.

Have you tried cooking your meats in a slow cooker? Cooking it all day with lots of veggies, then freezing them in little containers. Someone on this forum posted really good websites for recipes

They had some wonderful recipes. I even made a Pinterest board to hold them all.

I have eaten very lean steak (blade steak), medium cooked and it goes down easily, haven done porkchops. Slow cooker is good for pork chops becaue I have done it before and they are very tender and moist.

I have been on this Chilli kick with kidney beans(you can use any Beans you like) ground turkey, stewed and regular tomatoe and a fast way to do this is with McCormick original chile seasoning pack, i double the recipe and it is fast and very good, high in Fiber, high in Protein and I ate it at lunch 1 cup, and dinner most days for a 1 week and loss 4 pounds that week. Just made more chili last night, and will freeze 1/2 of it. I get my fill this morning and I am mad becaue I will have to wait 4 days to eat it. lol

at my nutritionist appt (and myself via google) printed off a huge list of foods that have Proteins (its on my fridge) and i get my Protein from those items (beans/chicken/steak/tuna/beef......) i also drink one Protein shake in the mornings (as i am not hungry in the a.m. and also too tight). why he would bless you out is beyond me (unless you are doing like 3 a day shake thing like on the pre/post ops) and then i could understand. so go to google, find a listing of Protein rich foods---select and eat to lose weight :)

Hi Donna,

I lived on Protein shakes and Protein Shots my first year of being banded....especially in the morning when my band was very tight. I still use Protein Shakes periodically in the morning or when im travelling and when I work out to be sure to get it all in.

I also have trouble with chicken. I find if I cook beef medium instead of well done... It is easier to eat. I can't eat leftovers for the most part. Slow cooked pork works wells. But I mainly eat fish (which I love). But like you, when I get tired of it, I eat chick peas, Beans, etc.

When I didn't get enough Protein when I was first banded my hair started falling out. Hence the protein shakes and bullets. It immediately corrected the problem.

My doctor said that I could have Protein Shakes after surgery for as long as I wanted too. I don't know if you like eggs but but 1 egg has 7g of Protein. Also 1 cup of skim milk has 8 g of protein. You should also get some whey powder......1 scoop mixed with Water or any beverage has 25g of protein so you would be more then half way there for the day. Good luck!!

I have 3 Protein Shakes a day. But I am also working on muscle building and need a lot of Protein.< /p>

chicken leg quarters are a great source of not only Protein but Iron too, I eat them 3x a week. The dark meat is very tender and moist. If you cook chicken breast, sliced thin you can sautee' them in sauce like Pasta Sauce right there you are getting a vegtable serving. I had chicken breast cutlets cut up in light alfredo sauce last night it was very moist. You can make your own ground turkey meat and add egg whites, low fat sour cream to the mixture to moistened it up. The trick is not to overcook your meat. sautee them or moistened them up.

I don't have probelm with any meat unless it is really dry. As far as hamburger how about meatloaf, or meatballs, sloppy joe or seasoned with taco spice to top a salad? I am a Greek yogurt fan, actually kind of addicted and eat a couple a day. Almost everything has a little protien in it, 1 - 3 grams. It all adds up. If you don't track your food you should. Myfittnesspal will track your protien along with your calories.

If you have problems with meat, try smaller bites and eat slower, make sure it is moist and not over cooked.

Also try boneless skinless chicken thighs in the crockpot. Use your favorite marinade or sauce and let them cook on low for 8 hours and it is super moist and literally falls apart.

As far as the protien shakes, I never drink them. I am 2+ years post surgery and have drank a total of 2 (that is pre and post op) I don't like them but obviously haven't tried many!

The last thing my surgeon said was absolutely ZERO liquid calories. I try to stick to that. Sometimes tho I just have to have a glass of milk but very rarely!

I think the protien shakes are great for those who have trouble getting in their protien but remember they pass right through your band so they won't help keep you full and satisfied. (supposidly???) That is my surgeons take.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My problem with ground hamburger meat/turkey is it gags me to eat it now since we have to chew chew chew, I just can't do it. I do and have tolerated dark meat chicken and like it. I just don't want my hair to start falling out, eek! Scary thought. Today my mom and I are going to the Cracker Barrel and I am ordering a bowl of Beans to eat. I love Beans too. I can't thank you all enough for all your suggestions.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
