Does anyone know how much Fluid is put into your band originally at the time of surgery? Is it filled at all? Or just put in place and fluid fills don't start till after you're completely healed? I got banded 18 July and after the first week or so, can't feel any restriction and can eat whatever, whenever, as fast as I want...with no concequences. It would only make sense if my band was empty, right??!

Most people are banded with little or nothing in their band. Because of this, most recover from surgery and realize they can still eat exactly like they did before surgery. It usually takes multiple fills for most people to have restriction in their band.

What your going through is totally normal.

However, please keep in mind that just because you can eat more than a cup of food per meal it doesn't mean that you should. Stick to band sized portions and healthy food choices despite your lack of restriction. You'll be very glad you did in the long run.

I dont know if all surgeons are the same but for me there was no liquid put in the band when you have the initial surgery. It is just put in place then gives your body time to adjust to the forgein body and there is a little restriction just because it was placed at the top of your stomach. I go in 3 weeks post op to have my 1st fill.

My Dr put in 4 cc at surgery and another 4 at first fill and 1 at second I still don't have that much restriction and I go tomorrow for third fill which I prob will get 1 cc and I hope for more restriction that will make me at 10 cc.

i got 3ccs at surgery. i just got my first fill (4 weeks later). it wasn't easy to find the port so i had a fluoro fill. they were able to do a barium test and he was more aggressive with the fill. i am at 7.5 ccs now and although i can physically eat more, i do feel some restriction. i have been stuck and pb'd so i think i am in like a yellowish green zone. i might go back for more, but i would like to see how i do at this one first. try eating some foods that aren't so "band friendly", like apples with skin, eggs. Your band might be able to handle the little more chunk in the food and allow you to feel more restricted. Be careful though, I'm not a doctor.

Everyone will post a different response. But, I did ask my doctor this VERY question. He said that the band MUST be "primed" when you have surgery. He said that my band was primed with 1 cc. I don't know that I understand the logic behind his answer . . . but that is what he said --- the band can't be totally empty.

All bands have a small amount of fill in at the time of banding. It is necessary to help fill the tubing connecting the band to the port. But it is only a small amount and does not fill the part of the band which is around the stomach so you will not feel any effect from it.

My doctor does 3-4ccs. As you can see it varies.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
