For the most part, the only soda I try and drink is from a soda machine, over ice. This seems to seriously lessen the carbonation. My nutritionist (who works in the surgeon's practice) said to poor canned or bottled sodas into a glass with ice and let sit for a few minutes if I wanted to drink soda.

when i started my pre op (all liquid) the dr said no to soda.........so after 2 weeks (day before surgery) i was able to drink all the soda i wanted.....so i took one (drink) and after 2 weeks without it, i couldnt drink it. it tasted awful and i spit it out. i have no desire to drink soda now. i am a crystal light girl now.

but like the other posters said, its up to your dr and their ok or not. if in doubt, ask them. all they can say is no. (or its okay)

My doctor has no issues with patients drinking carbonation as long as it's diet and not regular.. and in moderation. I was banded 10 weeks ago, and occasionally I have diet coke. I take SMALL sips. And like another poster mentioned, having fountain or 2 liter soda helps lessen the carbonation. I never get uncomfortable or burp when drinking it. I just take it easy.

My nutritionist said it was not recommended but it was okay, the flatter the better. I sip at it and I make a can of pop last 2 days or so. I can't gulp it like I used to anyway! I don't like reg. coke, only diet. We went to a Jays vs. Yankees Baseball game sunday and i am STILL working on my drink lol.

Don't think I can give up pop completly.

My nutritionist said no soda, but, strangely, the day of my surgery when the hospital brought me dinner they brought me ginger ale.....so I don't know how good or bad it is for the band. But I'm not a big soda drinker to begin with so I didn't drink it.

I would tell you to try to refrain from them. My doctor really didn't have a big problem with me having them but said if I did he would rather me drink a regular soda than a diet and that I probably wouldn't want them anyway. He said anything with asperatame is bad bad bad for anyone, he will not allow anything in his home with it. Suggested I only use Truvia or real sugar which would be empty calories. I don't know if he put some sort of spell on me when he said that because I use to drink Diet Dr. Pepper constantly, now I haven't had one since July 15th, the day before my pre op diet started. I did take a sip of one just the other day just to see and honestly it didn't even taste good anymore. Plus the carbonation can cause you some discomfort with the band so I say no to soda's!! Crystal Light now has CL pure which is made with truvia, I am stooked about it and I use it to drink Iced tea (In the South you have to have your iced tea!)

I gave up pop during my preop diet. I was terrified because I get Migraines when I go without caffeine. I found Crystal Light Energy that has caffeine in it, and I put that in my Water. However, now that I've had surgery, that doesn't even taste good. So far I haven't felt the craving for pop and haven't had caffeine withdraw headaches. I am too chicken to even TRY carbonation now that I have the band. I don't want to mess anything up, and I also don't want to get a taste of it and get addicted again.

My dr said it would cause complications and I am just not ready to risk it. I went soda free about two months before surgery. During stressful times I want one, but it all in my head. I am using mios and they really help.

Eh, I had a can of Pepsi today for the first time since being banded a little over a month ago. We went camping and it was a treat. I shook the hell out of it before I opened it to make it flat as possible. I drank it slowly over the afternoon and I didn't have any problems, but it really didn't taste that great. All I could taste was the corn Syrup. I'm pretty over soda at this point, which is crazy to me since that's literally all I used to drink.

My doctor didn't want me to drink soda because the carbonation can cause issues with your restriction. He did say that if we wanted a little that we could leave soda open in the fridge overnight so the carbonation is gone. I just stay away from it all together because it upsets my stomach and I have a hard time loosing weight when I drink it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
