Someone Turn Me On To Best Tasting Protein Shake

Recommended Posts

I like Syntrax nectar brand. My favorite is the cappuchino. I put it in my coffee. I also like it in 1% milk. It has 24 grams of Protein and hardly any carbs. It completely disolves. There is Strawberry-Kiwi; Chocolate; Fuzzy Navel; berry, you name it. You can get it at the Vitamin Shoppe or from Amazon. Its a little pricey, but lasts a long time.

Ps. September 29th will be my 1st Banniversary! :P

I just looked at it on Amazon and I cannot see anywhere that says how many servings you get from a 2# tub of it. Can you give me an idea? The nectar runs about twice what I am paying for Protein shake mix at Walmart, but I don't know if I am comparing apples to apples.

Thanks!

Lori

eta: I just looked at Vitamin Shoppe and it says 130 scoops, so that helps. And I see they have Pink Grapefruit...may have to try that for sure!

eta: I looked at a different site and it showed that each serving size is 1/4 scoop! So you use 4 servings per scoop of mix, which gives only about 32 actual servings...the WalMart mix gives 24 servings for about $12...I did order some packets of the pink grapefruit to try though.

Ariel Ortiz and other leading developers of modern gastric banding strongly caution against using Protein shakes or Soups because the band is not designed to work with Fluid, soft food or crispy (crackers, chips ect) foods. They will go right through without providing saitity at all or for long. A person will consume all those calories and then be hungry. My MD (at a teaching hosptial) also pointed that out. I do keep an Atkins drink with me in case I'm stuck someplace with no decent food choice but the bulk of Protein should be from desne meats/fish. The denser chicken/salmon will stay in the pouch for many hours and is far better quality protein than any drink.

It's essential to use Protein Shakes during the times you are required to be on a liquid diet...i.e. pre and post op and after fills.

It's accurate that we should not rely on Protein Shakes for our daily nutrition, and that eating healthy foods should become the primary source for protein and proper nutrition.

But all bandsters will need to be on a liquid diet at some points during their weight loss journey...so it is imperative to have one or more that you find tolerable or even actually like. Using protein shakes during those times is necessary.

I don't believe that any bariatric surgeon would tell patients not to use protein shakes for augmenting their diet while newly banded and while having to be on a liquid diet. Protein shakes are not designed to replace food; only to augment proper nutrition.

But she is looking for pre-op suggestions. My surgeon didn't give options, it was two weeks of Opti-fast. It was expensive, but it did the job. I had some extra shakes leftover from pre-op, I use them in the morning when I'm not very hungry.

Best of luck,

Bibi

Personally, I like the Isopure. They have several favors including mango and vanilla, but my favorite is chocolate chip cookie dough. It's a little pricy, but taste much better than the other brands I've had.

I wouldn't say it tastes like thin mints, but it's good.

I have several I like. I normally am too tight in the morning to eat real food so I rely on a shake to hold me over until lunch.

powders I like:

unjury chocolate splendor, vanilla, unflavored, chicken Soup

Syntrax nectar Cappuccino, caribbean cooler, strawberry mousse, Roadside Lemonade.

All of these are currently in my pantry so i don't get bored with one flavor.

I also stock several flavors of crystal light, MIO, and Torani sugar free syrups so I never have the same flavor. Another option is to add a teaspoon of sugar free instan pudding mix. Yummy!!

chocolate powder + coconut torani Syrup + splash of almond extract = almond joy

Chocolate + Peanut Butter + caramel torani syrup = snickers

Cappuccino + chocolate torani syrup = mocha cappuccino (hot or cold!)

I will often make the caribbean cooler or lemonade with my snowcone maker and have it like a slushy.

Got my Unjury sample pack today. Had chicken Soup for dinner....a bit salty, but tolerable. I wouldn't say good but not bad either :D

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
