Duration Of Pre-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

I begin my pre-op diet tomorrow. I am looking forward to the journey. My surgery is August 1st so my pre-op diet is one week. I notice that many people have 2+ weeks of pre-op diet. Why the variation? Any insight? I'm just curious.

The liquid diet(from what I have read/heard) is to shrink the liver & fat around the stomache to make surgery easier/safer. My surgeon said it depends on your BMI how long you have to be on pre-op diet. Makes sense to me I guess...The higher the bmi the more fat that is around the stomache to interfere with the procedure...

not sure... mine was 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after.

i guess that decision is up to each individual surgeon.

Pre-op diets vary by surgeon based on their experiences and the patient's medical needs/history. Same with post-op diet phases.

My BMI was 36 when I started my Pre-op diet, clear liquid only with 3 shakes a day. I was down under a 35 BMI yesterday for my surgery. My Pre-op diet was 5 days.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
