When Is Enough?

Recommended Posts

I have heard some people say they eat roughly a cup a meal, some say 2-3 ounces, some say for 15 minutes and they are done. My nutritionist says "until your satisfied". Well for those of us who have never done such a thing "satisfied" is a pretty foreign concept. I have asked for something a little more specific and she just dosn't give it. Until I learn what satisfied is I feel like I need a guideline. Some say they get a runny nose or hiccups when their band signals full.. I havn't found that clue yet either.

I get hiccups if I eat too much...I think my satisfied comes way before

The hiccups.

When you no longer feel hungry you are satisfied. Just eat slowly and chew well.

When I'm hungry I've found my tummy starts growling. I make myself a cup, eat slowly taking about 20 minutes and I can feel and hear the growling is gone long before I finish. I usually stop and don't eat the whole up. To me that's being full. I have noticed if I eat the whole cup I end up burping after - so maybe that's along the hiccups line? Only twice have I finished the whole thing.

I've always heard a cup per meal as well until my Dr. told me to throw out the measuring cup and to simply look at my hand. Place it palm side up and fingers together. He said to eat a piece of meat/protein that is the size of my palm and eat veggies the size of my four fingers. He also said to eat the Protein first of course then the veggies. So far it's been working for me. I guess it's kind of 6 in o e and a half dozen the other.

Satisfied is lack of hunger, which is a totally new concept for most of us. I do not get the "soft stop" that many of us get...the hiccups or burps.

So, when I was first learning to eat, I kept asking myself, am I no longer hungry with each bite. When you reach the point that the answer is, I am no longer hunger, and yet, I am not hurting myself from being full...it is time to stop. It can be hard to do. After a few times of hurting from being full, you will understand. Full hurts. As you reach that level of not being hungry, you will learn to stop, but at first, you need to keep asking yourself, and listening closely to learn what it feels like.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
