Just had my first fill

Recommended Posts

Been bad this last couple of weeks in terms of weight loss so they called me in for a fill ... it was about the right time anyway

I have an 11cm band and i think i got 4cc's ... was done under xray and had a lovely barium meal to watch the band working on the tv screen...was quite cool in a way

The needle was a bit painful going in but they didn't give me anything to numb it ... just had to be brave..

Hardest part was drinking 5 mouthfulls of barium sulphate ... its thick and slimy and just made me want to throw up and i had to hold a mouthfull in my mouth until they said swallow ... its not pleasant but they watched the band work and made a couple of adjustments to get the flow rate as they wanted to prevent frequent adjustments

1st years fills were included in the package costs

Back to drinks only for a week again....oh joy :)

Cheers all

Jamie

Hi, this is my first post here. I was happy to find this site.

I had my band filled last week. It was 5 weeks after surgery. I had lost 20 lbs. They only put 1 cc in. She tried to put in 2cc but it felt like it took my breath away. Now, one week later, I feel like its not tight enough. Should I wait the suggested 6 weeks or call and let them know that I dont think Im tight enough?

iwitness, I've heard the oldsters say that it sometimes takes a week or two for your fill to kick in. I'd say give it a little time. Be sure and drink your Water and get your Proteins in. Oh...welcome to LBT.

I am getting fill #2 the 30th. The past few days it felt more tight, but yesterday I ate like a horse. Kinda scared me. And I havent lost a pound in over a week.

iwitness....I agree with you. I was banded on 2/13 and have lost 12lbs. I had my first fill 3/10 and definitely did not feel "filled" enough. I'm going to give it one more week and then beg for the second.

Stephanie...the fill is easy enough. Yes, the needle stick hurts...especially if they don't numb it. But, the good doctors hit your port with the first try, and it's not much more than a bee-sting pain. Following hitting your port, they inject the saline. You can watch it go in and tighten the band on the x-ray. Way cool. Then, you drink the bariumm WHILE THE NEEDLE STAYS IN YOUR STOMACH. It's weird...but doesn't hurt. Just very uncomfy. They adjust the saline. Then you're done! No biggie.

Looking forward to the next fill so I can start losing some SERIOUS weight!

Hi Kellcap,

My surgeon is Spivak also. In fact, I go tomorrow the 22nd for my third fill. No, he doesn't give a local, but trust me, you won't need one. The port needle does not hurt. It is a very light stick, and is not uncomfortable at all.

Good Luck, and don't you just love him?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
