Lap band diet

Recommended Posts

Have any of you "tried" doing the post op diet before your surgery just to see what it was like to eat like that? I am starting it today just to see what it will be like after the band. Now I wonder if I can tolerate the diet and lose wieght why would I put myself through a surgery? We will see how long I can go without wanting to knaw off my arm LOL

I think it would be a good idea to try it out to get your head in the game. However most tend to be like the poster above, and treat the last few weeks before surgery as a one big last meal. But yeah preparing for you new life is always a good thing.

you will have to do a liquid diet for one to two weeks (depending on your BMI and your surgeon) prior to surgery. i have to do a two week liquid diet starting on November 17th through December 1st, no thanksgiving feast for me ; ( . i asked my husband if he would do it with me and he said no but he promised to do the cooking for those two weeks so i am not feeling too much torture.

Not gonna lie, my last night before surgery, I cheated on my pre-op diet (I had been religious about it, so it wasn't awful) and had my "last supper." An entire box of Panda Express filled my tummy that night. :) I've never been able to eat an entire thing since.

However, at some meals my mother put about as much food as I would eat on my plate (she had a gastric sleeve) to see what I would be able to eat. You don't have to eat JUST that. Your stomach isn't meant for that yet. But I would definitely experiment. Eat what a bandster would eat and then wait about 10 minutes. Then just continue normally. Just get a little feel for it, and enjoy that "last supper." :)

If you are doing the post op diet "before" your surgery, you are not going to get an actual assessment about what it will be like after the surgery. To a non banded person, what we eat would probably make you want to chew your arm off. But to us banded ones, eating little is satisfying and all that is needed without feeling empty. The best part is, no matter how much you want to pig out after the surgery, you just aren't able to without a consequence so it helps with disciplining yourself. Just remember, nothing tastes as good as thin feels! Good luck! :D

I did and I think it totally prepared me for what was ahead. I started it at one month out and went straight into the two week pre-op. I was like you - just wanted to see if i could really do it, and I could!! :)

I agree with one of the other posters - I don't think it would be a true assessment. If I had tried this I would've been hungry and unsatisfied - really if I had the control to eat this amount before banding I would not have needed the lap band.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
