Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone

Just checking in to see how you are all doing, it has been a very long time since I have been online and I have had many life changes since. I have been banded for 2 yrs now this past July and only lost 60 lbs. My goal was 100 but so far that has not happend. But hey only 40 more to go. It would seem that I have a 10cc band and right now I have 8 cc in the band so the doc says. lol

Anyway just touching base to see how your all doing and to catch up.

Peace

Michele

I just the past couple weeks starting haveing an issue with heartburn! I am so afraid of what it could be. Like I said I am I do feel at my sweet spot but now this..I have moved to a new state and have a new doctor so this has been a huge year for me. The heartburn is not a big deal but it is noticeable when I get it. And once I had to take an antacid! **** the one time the new doc gave me a fill I had to have some taken out because he tightened me up so bad I could not drink morning coffee.. now I can drink things and wonder if maybe I might just have something stuck an it is causing a problem you know.. Not sure what to do really a bit scared

Thanks for popping on and if you have any input on this matter please help a girl out with insight..

Thanks

M

Hi there! I was banded dec 3 of 09. I am 210 lbs down. I am enjoying the physical transformation but have had to work a lot on the mental and emotional aspects of it. Anyhow....just thought I'd chime in.

210 lbs that is AMAZING!!! Congrats to you! So you said you had to work hard on your emotional/mental part of losing so much weight? I am not sure I understand really. Your happy you are down this much right? I am sorry I just did not have that much to lose so I guess I have no idea.

I think that is great that your down so much and I know how much of a change it was for me to curb my love for food. Since I had the surgery I have gone more to flavor then quality! If you know what I mean.

Thanks for chiming in and keep up the great job your doing..

Wow, that's great. You might want to revisit your patient profile. It says that your starting weight was 298. I'm guessing you aren't down to 88 lbs. It also says your out of pocket was a million dollars! Anyway, good job! BTW, I was banded in June, '08. Down 148!

glad you are doing well. I haven't been online in awhile. just off and on briefly. Emailed a few people as well to see how everyone is doing as well. I have been banded since Feb 09. I"ve had my share of trouble off and on, throwing up, slimming and a few months ago had to go into hospital because they found out my band slipped. Its been 2 months since they removed it and put it back. I"m better, no pain and I can eat pretty much everything. Don't have the restriction I would like but have only have had 1 fill so far. I'm hoping in another month I can have another one. I was only able to tolerate before up to 6cc so not sure what this time around is going to be like. I started at 236 in 2009 and before my slip i was 149. I"m back up to 168 and hope to get to 130 in the next year. I'm still very hungry and I can eat alot at one time. I feel my stomach in puffy not able to get it to go down. I hope that weight gain didn't go all to my stomach, but its looking that way. Wish me luck going to try to get on the weightloss wagon again. Good luck to you and feel free to write me back.

I was banded July 09. I have lost a total of 24kg (53lb) and am now maintaining at between 50 and 51kg. My band is not overly tight. I can eat most things so long as I am careful but sometimes I do have episodes where I eat too fast etc and something gets stuck. I am not a model bandit as I don't exercise. I am happy with where my weight is at. Yes I would be even happier with a flat washboard stomach like all those 20something airbrushed models in the mags but that is not likely to happen. I fit into an Aus size 8 pants(us 4) and 10(6)top. My only issue is it is so hard to buy jeans that fit well as I am between a size 6- 8. If they fit my legs they don't fit the waist and vice versa. See it can be hard buying clothes even when you're not overweight.

I saw one of my neighbours today that i haven't seen for 3 years and at first she didn't recognise me and then she told me how fabulous I looked. She asked what my secret was but I didn't think announcing to someone I don't know well in the middle of our local post office was a particularly good idea so i just told her i eat a lot less!

My only regret is that i didnt do this sooner.

Hello there

Thanks for posting..I to was banded in July 09 and down just about 60lbs and that seems to be it! I don't excersise either and I am no where near a size 8! lol I had a ton of lbs to lose and maybe with this last fill and my sweet spot I can get some more weight off. I do have a gym at my office and for 10 bucks a month I might do it. I might break down and get my sweat on, oh god I so hate the sound of this.

I love food and I totally enjoy cooking, but of course once the band was in place many things on those programs changed. Less food, less cooking and more flavor!

Anyway i keep moving forward and I also do NOT regret doing this at all.

Keep in touch!

Michele

I was banded in July 2009 lost 84 lbs but battle over a few gained back. My Dr doubled my antidepressant about 6 months ago and no matter how I ate or how much I worked out I was still gaining a little every month. until I got up to 10 lbs. My depression is so bad I require a large dose of meds. That med was working for me but I am not going to gain any more. It takes me a long time to lose 10 lbs.

Today I went to Dr and we changed me to another med that he promised would not cause weight gain and will be able to continue to lose if I follow the plan. I started on them today and as with all meds the beginning side effects are killing me. I just want to be heathy and happy at the same time.

All the above posts are amazing, you should be so proud of your weightloss and hard work!!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
