Hello! I am new and 2 weeks post-op

Recommended Posts

HI everyone! I have watched this forum for months, but now that I am 2 weeks post-op, I realize that I need to get involved. I had surgery on May 19, 2011 and I have lost almost 16lbs so far. I am trying to everything by the book. I just started mushies today, but I feel like I'm still not doing it right, even though I haven't eaten anything I;m not supposed to eat. I hear so many people say that they hate their bands, so I'm freaking out a little. I guess I just want some reassurance that there are people who are happy that they made this decision.

I look forward to hearing back from you all!

Lucky you..........I can't wait for my mushies next week. (LOL) I never thought I would be talking about "Mushies". Enjoy them slowly and I look forward to having a toast (Protein shake) with you next week to a week of mushies for me. :D

. I guess I just want some reassurance that there are people who are happy that they made this decision.

I love my band! I have been banded for 8 weeks and only wish I had it done sooner! I have had no complications and am able to eat anything I want (I don't eat meat - I'm vegan) but now I fill up much quicker and stay full longer. Exercise /drinking Water is the KEY! I workout 6 days a week - mountain biking/running and boot camp.

There are a lot of us that love our bands and are doing great. Congrats on getting your band!

Definitely count me in as a happy bandster! And I know a ton of other bandsters through my blog -- not a single one who has ever said that she hates her band! I love mine. It has completely changed my life to be able to feel good about my body and weight, and to finally have control over the one thing -- my weight -- that made me unhappy and that I could not get a handle on by myself.

Hang in there on the mushies. It's actually a great phase, since you're not stuck on liquids anymore, and there are a ton of things you can eat. I enjoyed ff refried Beans with cheese a few times during that phase. Yum.

Why don't you consider starting a blog to get more involved in your process? That was an enormous help to me. It kept me honest and accountable, and provided a whole network of information and support that I never imagined I'd get that way. It really made a huge difference to me. I also like that I started it right before my surgery, so I have a diary with photos, data and tons of information chronicling the whole process. I like to go back and see where I was a year -- or two years -- ago, and to see how different I feel. It's incredibly easy to start a blog on www.blogger.com -- give it a thought! :)

My other advice to you is to take your measurements asap if you haven't already, and write them down. And, take a bunch of "before" photos if you don't already have a ton. You will want them later!

Wishing you lots of success and happiness with your band,

Catherine

Thanks everyone :)

It is good to know that there are people out there who are happy. I was just starting to feel overwhelmed with the number of posts talking about things not working the way they had expected. I am really happy with my band so far. Still a little tender in areas, but I'm back to work and loving that I do not have the desire to eat everything in sight.

I have enjoyed the mushies stage, but didn't even think about ff refried Beans with a little cheese. I might have to try that tonight. I did let some feta cheese melt in my mouth yesterday, and I thought I was going to die from how good it was.

Regretably, I do not have a ton of recent "before" pictures. I took a couple the night before surgery (in the standard sports bra and shorts) but I think those will be for my eyes only. I am planning on taking them again once a month so that I can keep track of the progress. I am going to take the advice and measure myself.

I know that this is going to be tough, but I didn't spend the time and money to mess it all up. I am ready for the work.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Kelly

Hi Jennifer1,

Recently my appetite has been starting to return. I am not always able to go three hours between meals, probably because I'm not getting enough Protein. Regardless of my appetite, I have been forcing myself to stick to the plan. I do not eat more than I am supposed to, and if it is before I am supposed to eat, I try and remember to drink something, because I am usually just thirsty. My biggest problem, though, has been drinking slowly enough and not drinking during my meals. I don't know about you, but I was the person who could drink 2 whole glasses of a beverage while having dinner.

From what I understand, some people are able to eat as much as they did before until they have a fill. I'm trying really hard to not let myself get there. What I can tell you is that it is easier to stay full once you move to soft foods. I'm eating more Protein and food that just feels more substantial. Hang in there. We didn't go through all of this to fail.

Good luck smile.gif

Also, keep in mind that people who tend to post are those that are struggling or feeling discouraged because they are seeking help. So it might seem that a lot of people "hate their band" or have problems but keep a perspective.

I would say the first 6 weeks you are pretty much just dieting on your own (that's my experience so far). You don't have a fill yet and haven't reached that 'sweet spot" and that may take several fills.

Good luck!

Hello Ellyk,

I love my band and I am 1 week post op today! I cant believe you did liquids for two weeks. I thought most doctors or nutritionist have you on liquids 1 week. I have lost 10 pounds since my surgery on May28th and I lost 8 pounds pre op for a total of 18 pounds. I started some mushies in my first week such as watery oatmeal and watery grits and today I had eggsbiggrin.gif.

Continue to follow the rules, you will be successful. I know I bent them a little.

Queen

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
