My weight loss is so slow. I can't help but get discouraged. I am excerising, eating the recommended foods and drinking my Water. I was banded 03/30/2011, my pre-op weight was 215 pds. I had a fill 04/30/2011 (not sure how much fill). My current weight is 205 pds. I am petite, so I need to lose about 90-100 pds. I know I did not gain it overnight, but hoped for more progress by now.

i too have hypothyroidism. i am very concerned that this will effect my weight loss. I've only been banded 5 days and i'm still trying to shake the last of the 4 pounds i gained from surgery (fluids and gas). i'm praying that i dont have an extra hard time losing cuz of my thyroid!

I had problems losing prior to the band. I am going to try and remain positive and just resign myself to the fact that this will be a longer, slower journey for me. On a positive note, I have lost. So, I know it will happen. I just have to be patient. Kind of tired of being asked every week, how much weight have you lost so far? Just feels like I am under pressure. Wishing I had not told anyone.

I feel all your pain!! Just stay positive and as long as your thyroid levels are normal due to your medication, treat it like you dont have a thyroid problem! thats what ive done. My surgery was Nov 2nd and my weight loss is very slow but all I care about is the numbers going down not up!! Slow and steady wins the race =)

I went to my Endocrinologist today for hypoThyroidism. It was my 90 day check up. The Nurse was shocked when she saw the weight difference.

My first weight was 305Lbs. ,, Today I was 271 Lbs.... That's a little more then 11Lbs. a month. You know what?? I'LL TAKE IT...

This is for all you, and the Newbies. This is possible to do.

I eat between 800-1200 calories a day, and 60-80G of Protein a day. That's it. I don't bother with a scale, they drive me crazy. It is more worth it, to go to the Doctors, get weighed, and watch them have the shock of YOU HAVE LOST WEIGHT OMG, and you know this because you will be able to tell by the looseness of your clothes.

So I try to keep it simple, and be patient, and it works !

I also walk around the block 3x a week.

I just thought I would share this, also I am on Armour Thyroid a Natural Medication.

Shirley.

Thanks Shirley & Crybaby, it is good to hear from other thyroid sufferers. I had Graves disease when I was 16 yrs old, got down to 80pds. Was in the hospital 2 weeks while they tried to get it under control. Had surgery to remove half my gland. Did well with no thyroid meds until age 40. I got hyper again, this time had remainder of thyroid removed. Ever since then it has been constant weight gain and other health problems.

You cannot get a doctor to prescribe Armour where I live and we have a teaching hospital! I would like to try it, many of the thyroid support sites swear by it. I have tried synthroid and cytomel together and felt the same. So currently am just on synthroid. What's crazy to me is when I was convinced to have the remainder of my thyroid removed, I was told it would be easier to control my thyroid disease. There has not been anything easy about it! I go about every 3 to 4 mths to my Endo and my TSH is constantly up and down.

I will try to not get so caught up on the numbers, although it is hard when people are posting their progress all the time. I weigh just once a week, but I might just take your advice and not weight at all. My next post op visit is mid July. My doc said I might need a fill if I am not losing 1-2 pds per week. I scheduled a follow up for next Thursday, so I will see what he recommends.

You have to be on some kind of a diet from your Doctor. Keep your Calorie Level down. I no it's hard, but if you want it to come off, then you have too...

We are not like the rest of the banders, weight loss for us can be very hard. So if it means cutting back in calories, and having the band a little snug so that I'm not hungry.... I'll do it.

I have 2 artificial knees, so I can't afford to be heavy on these knees.

I don't have High BP, or Sugar. I don't want it either. I'll be 57 in September, I want to live a while longer, and I don't like the feeling of being FAT ! I also don't like being treated like I'm stupid because I look the way I am. I didn't ask for this,,,, I started getting huge at 6 months of age. So I have never known skinny, and never will.

I would be happy at a size 12 or 14 for my age, and already I have had someone say hello to me, and look at me, not look away. He even continued the conversation slightly.

So put your mind to it, don't worry about the scale, and just go for it, and stick to it. It will make a difference.

Do you have a Walmart there? They carry it. or Order on line, you can even go threw CANADA.

Shirley.

I'm also hypothyroid and was banded on 12/15/11. I have lost 23 pounds since then. It's been a long road and I have a long way to go, but I am happy with my progress. I'm losing 1 pound or a little more each week, I feel good, I look good and I'm doing this the healthy way.

We knew this wasn't going to be easy, if we were looking for the easy way out we would've had lipo! You're doing great! Don't beat yourself up! Look at how far you've come!

I have hypothyroidism also. I have noticed unless I drink around 100 oz. of Water a day the scale won't budge much. I had 2 weeks of the same weight before I upped my water intake.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease 19 years ago. Instead of having the surgery to remove my gland I had the radioactive iodine treatment. It did not work the first time so I had to go through a second time but with a higher dose. So now I have my gland but it is a dead.

When I first went on thyroid medicine they gave me synthroid. It just was not controlling my thyroid levels. Then they switched me to Armour Thyroid which was great. I did so well everything even'd out. But now for the last couple years I can no longer get Armour. They say that the manufacture no longer produces it. So I am back on synthroid trying to get my thryroid level under control but they are still really high.

I was told that due to my hypo thyroidism that if I lost 1 pound a week that was doing really good. I was banded on 4-28-11. So far so good but they tell me that it is probably alot of Water weight. Well I will take all the Water weight loss I can get.

We all know this process is really hard but the people that do not have a thyroid problem have no idea how much harder it is for us folks with a thyroid problem.

So good luck to all of the other hypo thyroid bandsters. We will get there just may takes us twice as long.

Armour Thyroid is still available ! Maybe you have to check with different pharmacies, it can be ordered. There is not the problem that they had with it before. I would look into it, and if it can be got, then tell the Dr. that's what you want. It can't hurt to try.

I have had hypothyroidism for over 15 years. Before surgery I was on 250mcg of levothyroxine (a high dose). I had surgery 12/15/2011 and I am taking 137.5 mcg levothyroxine and dropping every couple of months. I hope to be off my meds some day, maby when im down about 50 more pounds. My hypothyroidism has been a roadblock to weight loss my whole life. I have never heard of Armour, I dont know if i should ask about it.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid about 25 years ago. It eventually set on hashimoto's thyroiditis. It really does make it difficult to lose the weight! I've been on synthroid for years, it works some of the time. Sometimes my immune system shuts down due to other stuff and my thyroid will get out of whack and I have to have my meds regulated. Keep a good check on your thyroid. I haven't had surgery yet but found this post interesting with some good useful info. God bless!

Hi,

I am also on Armour Thyroid and it works for me. You mentioned the manufacture doesn't make it anymore, but I get my prescriptions for it filled at my local costco pharmacy without any problems. You may want to check in your area if there is a costco nearby that carries it. Take Care.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
